In a serialized manifesto written from prison in Egypt, Sayyed Imam al-Sharif is blasting Osama bin Laden for deceiving the Taliban leader, Mullah Omar, and for insulting the Prophet Muhammad by comparing the September 11 attacks to the early raids of the Ansar warriors. The lapsed jihadist even calls for the formation of a special Islamic court to try Osama bin Laden and his old comrade Ayman al-Zawahri.

The disclosures from Mr. Sharif, also known as Dr. Fadl and Abd al-Qadir ibn Abd al-Aziz, have already opened a rift at the highest levels of Al Qaeda. The group's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, a former associate of the defecting theologian in Egypt, personally mocked him last month in a video, remarking that he was unaware Egyptian prisons had fax machines. Meanwhile, leading Western analysts are saying the defection of Mr. Sharif indicates the beginning of the end for Al Qaeda.

The author of "Inside Al Qaeda," Rohan Gunaratna said in an interview this week, "There is nothing more important than a former jihadist as important as Dr. Fadl criticizing the jihadist vanguard." Mr. Gunaratna, who acts at times as a consultant for American and Western intelligence, described the reformed theologian as "both an ideologue and operational leader, but he was primarily an ideologue.".......

Combined with the reports that there may be only 200 AL Queda foreign fighters in Iraq, good news indeed. BTW I would also note the announcement that 40,000 troops are going to be withdrawn from Iraq.

You won't get much response on this one the Bush Haters want us to lose so bad it drives them insane to read stuff like this.

If a post is put up about that James Bond Wannabe Wilson and his wife Valerie "Mata Hari" Plame they will be slobbering over it for a month.

One of the really big ones was the soldiers raping somebody over there and of course the Academy Award Winner THE ABBA GRABBA PRISON WITH DOG LEASHES AND LADIES UNDERWEAR.

But the two quickly fell out over questions of strategy and tactics. Al-Sharif reportedly disagreed with al-Zawahri over the use of violence. Al-Sharif gave way to al-Zawahiri in 1992, the same year that the Islamist insurgency picked up again in Egypt. Al-Sharif believed that violent attacks were futile, and instead advocated slow and steady infiltration into the structure of the state, but the group as a whole decided otherwise. Al-Sharif reportedly severed his ties with the Jihad, and devoted his time to his medical work and theological studies.

If you read the article it makes it sound as if this guy is still in jail not out practicing medicine. Perhaps it is another example of mistakes in Wikipedia?

My point was that his statements aren't news, he's been making them for years. As far as the Wikipedia article, it supports my point and has a working link as its source. Whoever wrote the article for Wikipedia seemed uncertain as to his legal status, just as whoever wrote the article for the Sun seemed unaware that the guy was making similar statements for 15 years.
