The Indians need to face the fact that the vast majority of their ancestors fought against the USA in war after war after war. By and large the Indian population fought for the other side in every war the US has been involved in up to WW1. They didn't help us boot the English out, quite the contrary in fact. The French and Indian war sure wasn't the French vs. the Indians. The list goes on and on. This fact is always forgotten when its time for another Indian pity party.

Here in MA there's tons of towns that have the suffix 'field.' Marshfield, Mansfield, Pittsfield, the list goes on and on. History tells us that naming convention came from the fact that there were previously cleared fields all over the area when the settlers first arrived with nary a soul anywhere around them. This ain't Nebraska. Back then if you wanted a farm in Massachusetts, you started out with a forest and an ax. Nobody knows for sure where the Indians who cleared those fields went; but the best hypothesis places the blame on Vikings who came over and fished off the coast. When their cargo holds were full the Vikings would land to take on fresh water and firewood for the return trip. There were inevitable contacts with the locals and diseases of all kinds were spread. These diseases are what destroyed the Indian population and emptied the settlements. All of this happened when the Puritans who eventually settled here were still in England or perhaps not even born yet. How in the world is anyone from the USA to blame for that?

I hate to admit it; but I have to agree with Quiggy. Let 'em build a casino and tell them to STFU.

Before "Bad Whitey" started killing them they were killing each other, did Whitey teach them how to "scalp"?

Why will a do-gooder bend over backwards to protect illegal aliens and never mention "free college" for the Indians.

The last time I have heard anybody say anything about the Indians was when Johnny Cash wrote a song about Ira Hayes.

Why do do-gooders hate indians

Why do democrats hate fat people

Not to rain on your parade, since I agree in part with your main point -- the American native Indians were killing, scalping, and eating/cannibalizing their brethren for centuries, if not millenia, before the European settlers came over.

But, if a field is cleared of trees to make it good for planting, it certainly does not take 600 years for that field to grow back. More like 40 to 50 years to get some good hard and soft wood growth. I once bought a farm in New Hampshire that had formerly been a full-bore working farm about 30 years earlier, and it had many 3 and 4 inch-diameter trees growing healthy as can be where totally cleared corn and hay fields had been less than a half century earlier.

If those "xxx-field" towns were named for fields that had formerly been cultivated, and it was done by settlers, it must have been Indians who had done it, and not more than 20 or 30 years before. I believe the Indians were driven out, wholesale. The Indians were very fierce and nasty warriors once they made up their minds to fight, but I do think they could have been incorporated into American society if more effort had been made. It hardly looked like it had even been a field. Looked like a young forest.
