Grpwthin tax revenue is driven by growth in the economy, not increases in tax rates. The economy is not a zero sum game. Problem is that politicans spend any and all increases in revenue.

Means testing at this point seems like a dirty trick. All those people paid in on the assumption that their money would be available to them later. Having it kick in on future money earned would be fine with me; but taking away money now seems like deciding that you need your money more than the bank that financed your car and of course refusing to give up the car. A promise was made.

That's true but raising retirement ages and/or taxes is kind of the same thing. The system is broken and someone's going to pay either with higher taxes, longer working lives or lower benefits.

I'm 40, a little more than half way through my working life and, hopefully, wouldn't qualify for SS if it were means tested - I'd prefer to keep paying what I pay now and have means testing than to have my taxes raised or have the SS retirement age raised.

the economy is NOT strong... the dollar is plummeting... and the average american owes years of debt...
GDP just went up 4.9% last quarter, after going up 3.8% the quarter before. The economy has added jobs for 50+ months in a row. The economy has been pretty solid for while now.

1) The economy is strong. It has been slowing and will continue to for a relatively short time. But it's strong and will recover in short order.

2) The dollar plummeting is bad in some ways, good in others. But most economists think it's bottomed out and will gain in strength starting about a week ago.

3) The average American owes years or debt ??? We have more debt than we should but the years thing is silly and based on things like social security which can be fixed with relatively minor tweaks. The raw numbers are scary but when placed in context to the size of the economy they aren't.
