As far as adolescent qualities go, so many people are so guilty of child worship and a refusal to allow adolescents to mature today. I brought up my son's buddy, but I had a friend back in the day who joined the marines out of high school. We were not at war at the time. Still, when I saw him a year later, there was nothing impulsive or adolescent in his demeaner. These young adults are only staying "adolescent" and "impulsive" because we are enabling them to be so. They are not given the burden of responsibility and accountability that is needed. This society needs to stop coddling its younger adult generation.

The guy needs a psych eval. If found of clear mind and competent to stand trial, prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. If found incompetent, institutionalize in a secure facility until such time as he is deemed competent. Then try to rehabilitate.

There are thousands of messed up troops, probably a larger percent than in the general public. I work with a few (veterans from the Iraq war), but I know people who work with only troops. As a culture we keep the physically and mentally wounded soldiers largely out of sight and out of mind. If young people got a little more coddling as children maybe they would not grow up to be terrorists, drug addicts, and so on.
