This is why I left this forum a few years back. A sick and twisted puke wants to blow up as many people as possible. He needs to be charged with 1000 counts of conspiracy to commit murder, 1000 counts of attempted murder and also for domestic terrorism. Period. Let him make little rocks out of big rocks in a nasty Federal Pen until he has a piece of granite placed over his head, then take his corpse and let it serve 1000 consecutive life sentences in Oregon prisons.
If that was a twisted punk from the Bronx who hates the Pats and their fans and planned to do the same thing at the Razor next weekend with you and your family in the stands your attitudes would not be this way.
No one is taking this case on its merits. Instead, everyone squares off on the same tired stale talking points and political stances, straw men and all. Just to argue. Just to prove who's political philosophy is superior. Knock it off and look at it for what it is. One sick prick who wants to dust off a whole bunch of people because he hates who they are and what they stand for. Like that Jests fan.
Look, no one is defending this young man. The issue at hand is whether or not he should be treated the way you propose. In my opinion, based on the facts so far, he was led by someone else -- we don't know who. He was then enabled by the FBI to follow up on his ideas and attempt to carry it out. In the normal course of events, the FBI would have stopped him much, much earlier, and he would have gotten a reasonable sentence and hopefully therapy, community service, and so on, to try to save him.
What do you think should happen to those kids who made plots to blow up their high schools, but were caught early on? Does this guy also deserve the kind of treatment you propose? Perhaps if the FBI had helped him, he might have gone further with his threat?
My issue is that you have a troubled 19 year old young man who got caught up in something terrible, and then may have been misguided by the FBI, perhaps hoping he would lead them to others. What would have happened if, when the FBI first got wind of this man's intent, arrested him -- he might have gotten some prison time, as well as some sort of help. After all, he's 19 and acted alone.
How do you know that he is "troubled" and not a dedicated jihadist? I didn't see the word troubled in the news article or any reference to psychiatric issues. In addition, so what if he's 19, he's an adult in the eyes of the law and at least 2 of the 9/11 hijackers were 20 and 21 years old. Had the authorities apprehended them that Tuesday morning, would it have appropriate to say" it's okay, they were only getting on planes with boxcutters. How much damage could they do?"

Like Philly just said, he is not a "youth". He is a grown 19 year old man. No one can lead a man who is not mentally deficient to do anything that they dont want to. Please stop comparing him to some high school kid. One salient point made here is to note the Oklahoma City bomber. He succeeded. He was put to death.
If the 9/11 killers were profiled and arrested for carrying boxcutters America's liberals and left wing media would have been outraged, 3000 lives would have been saved.

Okay, then let's compare him to the adults who threaten the President. If the FBI had hooked up with them, given them a fake gun, and so on, I bet some of them might have tried to carry out their threats. Also, 19 is really young, and a 19 year old who becomes so zealous and who came from a place like Somalia may well have mental problems. There's a big difference in the way we treat people who successfully carry out a plan and those who fail to do so. I would think that where the FBI enables someone, that should be taken into account as well, even though I support the FBI's actions (since they were probably hoping the perp would lead them to other bad guys).

Same is true for Timothy McVeigh. If the police had used profiling and stopped and searched all right-wing extremists, Oklahoma City would not have happened. Good police work does not require profiling.

Your last sentence is THE reason he was allowed to take it that far. That is not enabling, its allowing the perp to continue on his own under controlled conditions. BIG difference.
Its one thing to threaten the POTUS. (this carries a 5 year sentence for even uttering the threat) Its another to attempt the task. I am not sure, but I think that is one that carries a life sentence. To complete it is the death penalty.
Again you bring up his age. I would like to introduce you to my son's buddy, when he gets back from Afghanistan next year (I pray he comes back). He's 19.

The brain doesn't even finish forming until a person is about 24 years old. The reason that teenagers are impulsive is because those parts of the brain that drive impulsiveness finish developing before the more advanced cognitive functions. I think this is one of the reasons that defense of the country and other causes often attract young people. Relatively few 19 year olds are mature adults at that age. Most have many adolescent qualities.
That young man's plans should have been interrupted earlier (unless they were using him to get to others) so that he could have gotten help. It's still not too late. Keep him under scrutiny, but help him find a civilized path in life. If he can't be reformed, then keep him in jail for life.
