Gee I remember Jimmah and his malaise and the pundits saying we couldn't win an arms race, Stars Wars was crazy ect, then it turns out that the Star Wars program is what convinced Gorby and the Russians to the table.
I love the revisionist bitter spin from those who lost to Reagan, He won Through strength which you and your ilk said would fail.
He did well because he did not play by the rules.. you do not counter any of the points that I raised, because he cannot.. if Reagan was prez during this internet age of hysteria and half truths, he would have resigned or been impeached by now.
Most scholarly people who really understand what happened at that time attribute the change due to decades of failed economic policies.. in reality they had few choices, except to change their economic philosophy.
Not sure anyone won the arms race???

Reagan had about as much dirty laundry as Newt Gingrich or David Vitter.... he did a very good job of acting, but not much else..
Giving illegals amnesty is enough proof to show how much dirty laundry he had...
Never mind Iran Contra or negotiating with Iran in the summer before he was elected...
"General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"... was great theater.

Wow. My own personal stalker waited all of 4 minutes to respond to my post - that's longer than usual!
The rumpswab of the right responds with the predictable ad hominen attack, all the while ignoring the reality of Reagan... ignore the truth but attack the poster...
Keep on believing all those lies about Ronnie...

It wasn't theater to those on the other side of the wall.
Reagan just happened to be there when tha SU fell. All the POTUS's that preceded him have to share in the credit for starting and maintaining the pressure.
Took credit for the ending of the "Cold War", while in reality when he came into office the USSR was toast.. he was in the right place at the right time.
Now this is revisionist history. Other than Reagan, no one thought that the Soviet Union was in jeopardy.
Quote:
The Soviet Union is not now, nor will it be during the next decade, in the throes of a true systemic crisis, for it boasts enormous unused reserves of political and social stability. - Seweryn Bialer, Columbia University, Foreign Affairs, Winter 1982-1983
My own present sense of the Soviet future is that the least likely outcome is a collapse of the system. - Jerry Hough, Duke University, p.54, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, November 1982
Those in the U.S. who think that the Soviet Union is on the brink of economic and social collapse, ready with one small push to go over the brink, are ... only kidding themselves. - Arthur Schlesinger, p. 211, A Decade of Nightmares: The End of the Sixties and the Making of Eighties America, Phillip Jenkins, Oxford University Press, 2006.
All the intellectuals thought that we needed to accept the idea that the Soviets were here to stay and that it was dangerous not to cede half of humanity to their control. In contrast, Reagan the moron saw that they could not keep up with us economically and brought about the peaceful removal of the communist regime. Unfortunately for the people in the ex-Soviet bloc nations, this was a case of independence being gained because the previous government collapsed not because of a movement of the people (like the American revolution). As a consequence, most of that part of the world is largely run like a mafia now. The follow-up to the fall of the Berlin Wall was a massive fail.
