Beck, in particular, he says, is "like a schoolteacher on TV." Williams reportedly told Hamilton, "You need to go back to June -- June of this year, 2010 -- and look at all his programs from June, and you'll see he's been breaking open some of the most hideous corruption."

Why can't crazy people just be crazy? If I go and shoot up a school or mall or something, but then blame in on the PatsFans messageboard, will you feel guilty? I doubt it, because it's not your fault. I'm just a loon.

If someone on MSNBC is telling you that the owner of Lensecrafters in the Newton Mall is raping little boys, and you go there and shoot a bunch of mall cops, I'm thinking that without the rantings of the person at MSNBC, you'd never have shot the mall cops.

You might not have shot the mall cops, but odds are you would have shot someone. I have no idea what Beck said, so I can't try to defend what he said. But unless he said "go shoot this guy" I can't hold him accountable for someone else's actions.

Maybe this is what HD is getting at, but why does the fault have to be solely with the person who commits the act?

Clearly the shooter is most responsible. But if somebody pushed him in that direction, they bear some responsibility, too -- and that in no way absolves the shooter.

(I don't know if Beck actually influenced this guy -- but given his overemotional half-baked conspiracy theories, the possibility that he could seems real.)

If Gore's book was dramatic enough in its propaganda (and while I have read it, I've read about it, and his language of certainty regarding things that are not scientifically certain does push it into the category of opinion / propaganda, imo), and the Unibomber was acting on it, yes, you could say Gore had some responsibility for his actions.

But was his book that dramatic?
