This is exactly the problem whch I posted. The vast majority of people recieving food stamps are legitimate and are in desparate need of them. Your solution is let them eat cake until we fix it.
Honestly, its a little disturbing when you have politicians (Gingrich) going after food stamps which benefits people vs programs which dump money on gravy trains. What's even more outrageous, is when a politician is doing this in the worst economic period since the Great Depression. I'm all for reducing welfare and abolishing waste, but this is absurd.

You honestly believe that the majority of people on food stamps, actually need them? That is what's absurd.

Imagine????
I've said 1,000 times that I'd slash military spending 20%, and close all kinds of bases across the globe. I'm much more of an isolationist than most. This is a food stamp thread though.

Nah, no need to there. I just skip showering for a week to ten days, wear the same cloths all the time, and smoke like a chimney. That way I look and smell like a true local. You know what they say, when in Rome...

Ya but they eat a lot of olive oil & garlic and live longer than us!

I hope to God you're describing the men and not the women! Otherwise you'll blow a couple of my fantasies away quickly!

RIghhhttttt. Anything you say, RW. There's no such thing as poverty in the USA either, is there?

The nation's official poverty rate in 2009 was 14.3 percent, up from 13.2 percent in 2008 — the second statistically significant annual increase in the poverty rate since 2004. There were 43.6 million people in poverty in 2009, up from 39.8 million in 2008 — the third consecutive annual increase.

The poverty rate increased for children younger than 18 (from 19.0 percent in 2008 to 20.7 percent in 2009) and people 18 to 64 (from 11.7 percent in 2008 to 12.9 percent in 2009), while it declined for people 65 and older (from 9.7 percent in 2008 to 8.9 percent in 2009).

Similar to the patterns observed for the poverty rate in 2009, the number of people in poverty increased for children younger than 18 (14.1 million in 2008 to 15.5 million in 2009) and people 18 to 64 (22.1 million in 2008 to 24.7 million in 2009) and declined for seniors 65 and older (from 3.7 million in 2008 to 3.4 million in 2009).

Absurd? Its' part economics and part logic. High unemployment, bankruptcies, foreclosures, etc. is going to increase participants in the food stamp program.
The number of people that apply for a single position in their field is mind boggling. So what are they supposed to do, take a job which pays half as much and not be able to pay their mortgage. There are people abusing the system, but its a small percentage of the total.

Um, who said there isn't poverty? That's right, no one did. Certainly not me. Nice try though.

My "logic" thinks otherwise. They hand these things out like coupons. Go get some, you'll see.

Like I said before, the more you do for people, the less they do for themselves. This is basic human nature. This is the rule now in our society as well. People have become accustomed to having something done for them, or given to them.
