Default NY Times: Deportations From U.S. Hit a Record High

Quote:
Immigration authorities deported a record 392,862 immigrants over the last year, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday.

About half of those deported — 195,772 — were convicted criminals, also a record, Ms. Napolitano said, and an increase of more than 81,000 deportations of criminals over the final year of George W. Bush’s presidency.

It's so hard to think of anything that would match what I do: Fly to the moon? Jump out of planes? Bungee-jump off cliffs? None of that s--- matters to me. Yeah, I was more interested in the fact that they are focusing on deporting criminals. Let's have more of that.

I believe that this was reported previously and there were a whole bunch of naysayers on the other side disputing the information...

Guess that this good news now has legs...

Deportations up, illegal immigration down...

The numbers are still no where near where they should be. It's a fraction of the numbers of invaders we have. Plus, the feds are dropping deportation charges against thousands of illegals for no reason, other than the fact that they don't have a criminal offense. Um, all illegals are criminals since they are here ILLEGALLY! They all need to go ASAP.

Out of curiosity, what should the numbers be??

If illegal immigration is down, and deportations are up.. take it for face value, it is some progress...

Though it sounds like good news, I'm more concerned with how many are getting in.

If less got in, less would need deporting. We need to focus on keeping the boarders secure first. Then we can worry about what to do with the ones still here.

Good point. If the rate of illegal immigration doubles, then we would expect the Feds to catch and deport twice as many even if they maintain the same level of "effectiveness". I thought I remembered seeing some articles indicating that the number of people trying to get across the border had gone down (weak economy, more enforcement), but I don't know where to look for reliable data that indicates whether the flow has changed either way.

But that would be admitting that this administration is doing something that's working - and who wants to do that?

Less get in but it's because the economy is slow and the corporate powers don't need them as much anymore. If they were needed, they would be let in. The we would again be able to fall over each other about the "illegal problem" and wondering why it is allowed to happen.

Getting the criminals out at a higher rate while fewer try to get in is remarkable and makes me wonder why it wasn't that way before last year.

Obama sucks! What the hell was he DOING in 2008?
