Al Gore Wrong Again

On October 14, 1997, Vice President Al Gore said, “For those who argue that global warming is already changing the world’s climate, this year’s El Nino weather front is more than enough evidence”, the audience was told by Gore. In the next day, a report by the San Francisco Chronicle said: “Gore links El Nino to Global Warming”. The Vice President stated at the summit that growing frequency of El Nino episodes could be connected to the gradual heating of the atmosphere caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Ten years later residents in Argentina and Brazil are wondering if this winter will ever end. Buenos Aires recorded this Thursday (November 15th) the lowest November temperature in 90 years. Temperature in the Downtown weather station reached 2.5C. Since records began more than a century ago, only two days had colder lows in November. It was in 1914 (1.6) and 1917 (2.4). And ninety years ago the urban heat island effect was much less pronounced than nowadays. In Brazil's southernmost province Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil temperatures fell to 2.3C. In Sao Joaquim Monday's (Nov., 12) the temperature was -1.2 C with frost.

The culprit is a developing la Nina , a cooling of the water in the eastern Pacific along the South American coast, that some climatologists believe could indicate a return to the la Nina dominated situation that dominated from1947 to 1977. El Ninos, a warming of East Pacific waters. have been more common since then. Some climatologists believe the el Ninos may have caused what the IPCC calls "global warming".

NASA has recently indicated that the circulation of the Arctic Ocean has changed from the counterclockwise circulation of the 1990's to the pre-1990 clockwise circulation which could result in a cooling trend in the Arctic.

Hope all the naysayers are not wrong about this whole climate change debate, because if it can be reversed by doing something now a lot of folks are gonna look pretty stupid.. not sure how it will be explained to our grandchildren.

I am still waiting for the explanations for this year's hurricane season...

In 2005 we had a historically busy hurricane season and they blamed that on global warming, which actually makes sense since hurricanes feed on warm water.

So in 2006, they predicted another violent hurricane season.. except we ended up having a historically slow season. Of course, for reasons no one's completely clear on, they blamed that on global warming too (I ain't makin' this stuff up, folks).

Now in 2007, we have had a slow-to-moderate hurricane season. I want to see how they spin that to blame global warming. After all, isn't it supposed to be getting worse..?

That's right. And when you factor in the recent trend of much cooler weather in the Southern Hemisphere (the Pacific coast of South America, at least), then what do we have??

I think we have "Global Confusion". Face it, we are in a period of historical transition. The weather, politics, culture, communications, human relations, technology -- all of these and more are changing, evolving, and developing at the same time.

Time to focus on the basics. What's most important in life.

Could all of what you describe be climate change??? In many ways I hope you are right, hard to explain to the future generations if you are wrong.

like learning how to garden?... clean your gun?... gather batteries?

global climate change as a result of man's gluttonous burning of fossil fuels is very real. ... and we proud Americans burn 1/3 of it all for the world...

just as real is the very sobering FACT that global oil reserves are not being found ... and how much social anarchy will occur when global oil production officially drops by as much as 5%... they're predicting 35% within 30 years

some days, i almost wish i were Harry's age...

what a fine mess....

This stuff is funny. When doomsdayers come to town with fear mongering crap like "we've got less than 10 years....!" I cringe. To me, it seems as if the know it alls are trying to push forth some radical agenda because they're on a clock, and they know it. If they don't pass something soon, and the climate reverts, then they'll be exposed, and will loose their window of global socialization via global warming. Dr Gray said that in 10 years we'll be laughing about the claims some are making today. I wonder if he's right.

Exactly. It's the flipside of the "Terrorism is an immediate threat - give us all your rights" that many on the right wing are accused of doing. Fear mongering is fear mongering, whether the threat is climate or terror. Politicians and the media alike have discovered how powerful fear is, and don't think that they won't use it to push their agendas through.
