Like I said, you cannot legalize drugs that affect a person's chemistry in such a way that they become violent, such as crack and crystal meth. But, other drugs can be legalized. Legalization does not mean you can buy them at your local grocery. If the goal of legalization is to reduce the number of addicts, then obviously whatever form legalization takes has to have that in mind. For instance, an established heroin addict might be able to get controlled access to the drug as part of a program designed to help him live as productive a life as possible. A pot smoker might simply be regulated by imposing high taxes, with the idea that most pot smokers would rather pay a premium to get their supply legally.
The main focus, in my opinion, should be on addiction and stopping the illegal drug supply. Legalization would largely solve the problem of suppliers, dealers, and tainted drugs, and handled properly would not increase addiction. I think legalization would allow us to win part of the drug war.
