Why do Canadians come over the border and have their heart surgery in Lewiston or Portland Maine when they can get it done for nothing in Canada
Why do people from Northern Maine go to Canada for Prescriptions and Dental care, we have danced this dance before Harry?? Methinks you might be forgetting this.

On the kids numbers, there isn't enough information, not surprisingly. It's framed as black vs. white - should it be rich vs. poor. How are the poor white numbers compared to the poor black numbers ? And what are the deaths from ? Is there something inherent in blacks that raise their numbers ? Believe it or not, we aren't all the same. Men vs. women, black vs. white. There are differences and this article comes nowhere close to providing enough detail. Just like women live longer than men, does that mean they get better health care ?

It's worth mentioning that, while I agree that rich vs. poor is more useful than black vs. white (or more pertinently, hispanic vs. white, to compare the two largest ethnic groupings), all of our rich vs. poor data must be understood in the context of the peculiar caste system we have in America.

A man with one million dollars in the bank who is white, one who is black, and one who is hispanic, each gets different treatment in society. It is simply a given: a cabbie will pick up who he picks up. A cop will hassle who he hassles. I haven't time to substantiate this statistically right now (eventually have to get out of the house!) but will, if possible, on my return.

Anecdotally, however, I do know this black/white phenomenon first hand, after getting drinks late at night with well-educated black peers, with jobs pretty much the equivalent of mine. One guy could not get a cab. COULD not. And that's with cabs floating by every ten seconds. Eventually I put up my hand, one pulled right up, I opened the door and my friend got in. The cabbie looked about ready to have a heart attack. And don't even ask me why.

At any rate, as I said, in the context of insurance, the caste system overlays the class system. You're still more likely to have money if you're white. You're still more likely to be insured. At whatever level income you enjoy (or subsist at,) you still have additional layers of hassle based on skin color.

It may be important to think of these disadvantages primarily in terms of income, because that may -- may -- now be the vocabulary more likely to effect a positive outcome. But we should not blithely disregard the realities... and now, knowing there are counter-anecdotes coming, I am going to try to get my butt out of here to buy a car battery. I'll try to be more numerical about it sometime during the week.

Thanks,

PFnV

These exist in Europe as well. Think about the Netherlands.

Most of the births in Europe are among muslims who have low rates of drug use and AIDS.
