If there are indeed 2 Al Quaeds...one in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Why are we not crushing the one on the pakastani border. Why do we continue to engage the B-squad, and let the A-team grow?

seems to me to be 'Waging War 101" to gut off the head to destroy the body.

The Pakistan border with Afghanistan, the Peshawar region, has been a lawless region for centuries. Even today, the national military does not venture into that area because they know they will be betrayed, their families will be threatened, if not killed. It is a part of the world which is truly a "war lord" or "mafia" culture, with certain tribes holding on to their ancient territories, defending them to the death. Boys start manning machine guns from the age of 9 or 10, as soon as they can point and shoot.

So, no government of Pakistan has ever been able to control this district, and if any outside nationals were to intervene, it would cause an immediate tribal/civil war. These are people who truly live to fight and die. Death holds no fear for them, as their lot in life is already about as tough as it can get.

Their biggest commercial crop is the opium that comes from their immense poppy fields, which only adds to their detachment from the rest of the world.

Oh I understand all that, and apparently Al Quaeda does too. Just go to that region and nobody will mess with you, you will be allowed to do whatever you want and grow terrorists...right?

if there is one thing the international community is behind us on its destroying Al Quaeda. Even Iran is on our side with this one. Is fear of destroying our realtionship swith drug dealers the only thing thats keeping is from shocking and awing that region of the globe?

We should have our own "poppy fields" Americans love that stuff and will pay anything to get it, and get it they do.

Apparently you do *not* understand. The region is so Byzantine, so complicated, so lawless (by any standard of internationally recognized national sovereignty), so incendiary that no one has dared go and clean it up until now.

Doesn't mean it can't be done, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. It can and should be done. Just the Pakistani government has not wanted to tackle it and we are in a delicate relationship with Mushareef as it is. He is a relatively moderate and relatively friendly president, somewhat uncommon in that part of the world. And, they do have nukes, you know.

Anyway, I'm not saying your idea is wrong, not by any means; I am saying what the reasons are that it has not been implemented until now. It's no slam dunk.
