My first job was driving a Ice Wagon not a truck a Horse and Wagon when I was 14, every kid in the city ate Ice off the tail gate, I tell some of my grandchildren that I used to drive a horse and wagon through Harvard Sq and they think I'm nuts.
The horse's started to disappear right after the war, when I came home the only ones left were some of the Milk Wagons they were gone by the end of 1945 (the end of an era).

I remember chasing the milk truck for ice. Truckers in the day were always those guys with big arms. My grandfather (North Cambridge) drove truck before he enlisted in 41. He said the main road was Rt 20 to Worcester, and Springfield. His arms were like fire hydrants and he said he got them from that driving truck with no power steering. After Worcester, Rt 20 was a dirt track all the way to New York.

I was a truckdriver for 42 years most of it with St Johnsbury Trk Co in Cambridge I ended up driving for Star Market, most all of those company's are gone now, I drove many of those old ones with no power steering, I have talked to those from your grandfther's day, some of them used to say they camped out and slept in a field when they had engine problems on Rt 20 on the NYC run from boston, most tractors had big iron radiator guards on the front and we would use those to help push each other up the hills, back in those days Rt 20 & 15 were nothing but a steady stream of trucks.

Was going Navy, had an accident with a horse, left me with a sligt limp, went to work for the Army & E I Dupont driving truck at the Hanford Washington Plant, we never knew it but they were in on making the "Bomb" came home in 45, we had no idea what we were doing until we saw the front pages of Hiroshima.
I still have my paper work from the Navy telling me I was "accepted" and a friggin horse steppted on my foot and screwed the whole outcome of WWII up, if I had gone in the War would have been over a lot sooner
