A large nationwide poll of Republican voters shows that an increasing number consider themselves conservative, that about half favor universal healthcare and allowing gays in the military, and that the vast majority say spreading democracy shouldn’t be the United States’ top foreign policy goal.
The poll, conducted by GOP consultant Tony Fabrizio 10 years after he conducted a similar study,

The party has also gotten much older, with 41 percent of Republicans now 55 or older, compared to 28 percent in 1997.

Re: Problems for the Republican Party
Their president has been a massive failure. He's bringing the whole country down. Also it didn't help matters that when the GOP were in control of Congress, they were a rubber stamp for an unpopular agenda. Add the recent Pew poll on the public's overall political beliefs...
It's especially bleak considering that their base is getting older on average and are less likely to accept the modern trends your charts show. The Republicans are going to have to reinvent themselves, and that will happen if they lose the next election or two.
Republicans are always "older" because Liberals eventually grow up to be Republicans.
It could also be a sign of dementia. At any rate, I do agree Rightward Drift is an affliction that many people face when they lose the idealism of youth. It's worth trying to hold to that idealism, I think.
I was a Democrat when Democrats were Democrats, they are all gone now.
Hollywood, Jimmy Carter, Uncle Teddy and School Busing did it for me, maybe it's my age, nothing is forever, at times I will vote for a local democrat but they never seem to go anywhere the ones I vote for are to Honest & Moral and they don't believe the Government should raise your children or fill their heads with all their Socialistic Left Wing Crap that is dragging the country down to the level of some Third World Cesspool while those slimey grinning politicians run around trying to get their picture in the paper and push their little personal agenda's, our leaders today are self serving PIGS.
I have to say though after Bush stabbed me in the back with his backing of Amnesty for the Illegal Criminal Aliens, when he wanted to let the Arabs take our Seaports over and now when it is plain to the whole world that those ungrateful Muslim Dogs in Iraq will never give us credit for removing a Monster Dictator from their country or helping them to become human beings and ending their practice of carving each other up like slaughtered hogs then I say it is time to bring our troops home and leave those Animals to continue with their unholy murdering lifestyle, @#$% them. After all this, I don't think I will vote anymore, my time has come and gone, leave it to Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, Bob Hope, Tip O'Neil, Harry Truman, JFK, The Andrew Sisters, War Bonds and Nat King Cole, they're all gone.
I'm going out in my yard and shoot off some fireworks, @#$% everybody.

I was kidding partially but for those who like to talk about the demise of Republicans, you have to remember one very important thing - religion. You may not like the religious right. But most Americans believe in God and the Republican party is the God believing party. Remember, this is coming from a Republican agnostic but I also realize reality and it's what I just stated.
Speaking of agnosticism, if you get a chance to see any interviews with Christopher Hitchins on his book "God is Not Great", you should watch, I love the way he talks (not his accent, his words). He was on Tim Russert (not Meet the Press) on CNBC last night - it was a great hour.

If you hate liberalism and Democrats, why are you still living in a BLUE state??
Why not FOLLOW YOUR CONVICTION and MOVE TO a Republican state like Alabama, Indiana, or Missisippi??
