The equipment did fail, but I think the karma from the top was the reason.
As for this last statement of yours: all I know is that, officially "liberal" or not, the dominant media culture of the NYTimes-WashingtonPost-ABCNBCCBS axis played Jimmy Carter as the best thing since sliced bread, what with his southern drawl and peanut farm. They even trotted out his drunken brother, Billy -- replete with his "Billy Beer" -- to show what a "good ol' boy" he was. Then there was his "I am a born-again Christian" remark, made shortly before appearing in Playboy magazine. Go figure.

The irony of that is both of the rescue attempts failed because of equipment failures. Like Bush, Carter learned the hard way that our military isn't as capable as it purports to be.
Carter f'ed up because he tried to micromanage a field operation in Iran from DC, OTOH he tried to micromanage the economy and look how THAT turned out.
Too bad our congress (on a bipartisan basis) hasn't heeded these lessons, look at the energy bill and immigration bills as examples of legislative stupidity.

"How does (Miami-Ohio offensive lineman Brandon) Brooks not get invited to the combine? How did Vollmer not get invited to the combine? I don't know. We can't really worry about that. We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

Nothing like slamming our brave military for the position a couple of maroons put them in.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." That's what we get for electing retards. Nothing like a DC that can't get more than 30% approval for anyone.

Or how about Amy, his daughter. Went to Brown, was last seen in a tie-dyed tee shirt, sun glasses, and a joint in her mouth, singing "We don't need no edyoocashun" by the Moody Blues, "... all in all you're just another brick in the wall...."

That was by Pink Floyd.. not the Moody Blues. Tell me now that Rock and Roll music is bad.. can't wait for this response.

I KNEW it was one of them!! Always get 'em mixed up. Used to have albums by both, back in another life time.
No, music isn't bad; it's the heart behind it that counts. Even some less than perfect stuff still hits home to me because I can understand where it's coming from.
I recently downloaded a bunch of old favorites from years past, but don't have the same zeal for listening as I once did (35 years ago).
That sort of superficial a$$ki$$ing might make you feel good, but it belongs in a parade or a soundbite for your agenda.
My brothers a disabled vet. Nothing superficial about my feelings regarding the military.
