Default Death Penalty Deters Crime

Quote:
"Science does really draw a conclusion. It did. There is no question about it," said Naci Mocan, an economics professor at the University of Colorado at Denver. "The conclusion is there is a deterrent effect." A 2003 study he co-authored, and a 2006 study that re-examined the data, found that each execution results in five fewer homicides, and commuting a death sentence means five more homicides. "The results are robust, they don't really go away," he said. "I oppose the death penalty. But my results show that the death penalty (deters) — what am I going to do, hide them?"

The article passes on a few points against the study, such as insufficient sample size (60 executions in 2005) and data skewing (counting all homicides as deterable instead of ones where the death penalty might apply).

There also are other factors like whether you view the state or your fellow men as competent arbiters of capital punishment, or the cost of execution versus the cost of imprisonment (much higher in the case of execution).

Still, its food for thought. Is the death penalty a useful crime deterrent?

If they fried more people, and put it on TV? You bet!

Sure would beat paying for boxing.

The death penalty is one of those feel good things, oxymoron, that provides retribution to the victims family. IMO it is a good thing, but by the time they carry it out it is way too expensive, too controversial.. my idea is simple put them in high tech prisons in Montana, devoid of human contact, force feed them with special tv programs, let them exercise alone and bore them to death... much less expensive and much more effective.

Well, it definitely deters the guy they kill, no more crimes from him. I don't know about anyone else though. Its impossible to say. Japanese and European Homicide Detectives just sit around all day dl'ing internet porn 'cause there's nothing else to do. Does that tell you anything about the death penalty's deterrent factor? Nothing more than this study that's nailed it down to 5 saved lives per execution does

The death penalty was created not only to "deter" others for commiting crimes that warranted it the big reason is make damn sure the killer never kills again.

The death penalty should only be carried out in cases where the person is found guilty without a doubt, only when the courts and society knows for an absolute fact that the accused commited the crime.

A good example is the "Jeffrey Curley" case in Cambridge Mass, two Pedophile Creeps kidnapped little Jeffrey Curley (Ten Years Old) they raped him repeatedly for hours
(imagine the terror this little boy went through) then when they were finally finished with him they Smothered him to death with a gasoline soaked rag then one of these Animals got "Horny Again" as he put it, this bastard then Had Sex With The Little Dead Body. They drove to Maine and dumped the body in a River, a half hour later these two things stopped in Portsmouth NH and had some Fried Clams, they were hungry after all this activity.

The ACLU & NAMBLA somehow got in on this I can't remember how they were involved but that is to be expected from these two "bastard groups".

The two Pedophiles were GUILTY without a doubt, even the VILE ACLU & NAMBLA knew it, the killers admitted it, the killers are the ones who told the whole story, these two men should have been put to death a week after they were found guilty in the court.

Instead of DEATH these two child killers now are spending their days in prison, it is also reported that they both have "new lovers" they also get free health care, free dental, free food, exercise spa, TV, movies and free sex.

The reason they should have died isn't revenge the reason is that some day when many have forgotten all about this case these two will go before a Parole Board, (don't listen to that ***** about life without parole) at this parole hearing there will be several Pasty Faced, Sad Looking Slobbering Do Gooding Liberals, the two Monsters may very well be FREE again, someday.

These are the people that the Death Penalty was invented for, it is for people like this that the Death Penalty should be used and when it is used it should be done no later than 30 days after conviction but only if it is Proven Guilt beyond a doubt, sending an innocent person to their death is a horrible and inexcusable act.
THE KILLERS OF LITTLE JEFFREY CURLEY SHOULD DIE, TODAY.

Why do we keep GUILTY KILLERS alive for 20 years on death row, why do hand wringing screwball bleeding hearts sob and whail for a "Monster" like that Carla Faye women in Texas who claimed she had three intense orgasms while she was hacking another human being to death with a pick ax, thank God for George Bush on this one he sent that "killer b!tch" straight to hell where she belonged.

As much as I agree on this one, Massachusetts does not have a death penalty provision... send them to montana in my high tech, completely bored jail...

The main problem with the death penalty is that there's an enormous amount of evidence that innocent people have been killed quite often. I can't find the list of victims, but I did find this that reports that over 100 people on death row have been exonerated thanks to DNA testing:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/12/na...rtner=USERLAND

But, I'm also not convinced when a few economists conclude that the death penalty is a good deterrent. There's certainly evidence to support other points of view, such as:

I'd fry more people, and for lesser crimes. Basically, anyone who has a history of criminal activity, and no chance of parole, would be KFC'd. With DNA testing being accurate for everyone but people names OJ Simpson, I think the appeals process should be revisted, and possibley, revamped. If you started frying career criminals who are in till death anyway, my guess is we'd solve some problems with overcrowding, and would spike the deterant factor.
