Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, immigrant and first Jewish member of the Supreme Court, said that Americanization required that the immigrant adopt "the clothes, the manners and the customs generally prevailing here" and that he adopt "the English language as the common medium of speech."

But, Brandeis said, this is only part of it. "(W)e properly demand of the immigrant even more than this — he must be brought into complete harmony with our ideals and aspirations and cooperate with us for their attainment. Only when this has been done will he possess the national consciousness of an American."

This is where the right keeps getting it wrong. Their resistance to bringing the immigrants and minorities (legal and otherwise) into the dominant culture ultimately leads to the right wing having a weaker position. Imagine if the right wing (both Dems and Republicans) had supported liberal efforts to improve education, integrate communities, get rid of discrimination, provide adult education, offer job training, etc. If they had done that years ago, our culture would now be more to their liking. But, in general, the right wing has resisted the expenditure and resisted efforts to assimilate different groups. Now, the right wing is paying the price. And they're making the same mistake with illegal immigrants. The illegals are here, let's make the best of it, by demanding they adopt our values and language if they want amnesty.
