Default What's your opinion on the extent of constitutional rights?

How far does the constitution go? Lots of people here seem to argue that some people shouldn't have rights. I'm curious which ones.

The strength of the constitution is that is defines many things without qualification, when we make situational changes our freedoms become challenged and fragile.

I feel positively Nixonian now... the 5-1 early poll results in favor of the more robust reading of the constitution's extent seems to indicate one thing, whereas the bluster of a few dedicated right wing activists had me thinking everyone on Patsfans except a few were on the "other side". I am on the verge of postulating a great silent majority...

Everybody, man women child and all their dogs and cats should have rights in this country but shouldn't a line be drawn when the abuse of those rights starts to threaten the very existance of the people and the country itself.

Shouldn't a line be drawn when an enemy is using those rights to destroy those rights.

Shouldn't those rights be taken away from someone who is using those rights to KILL us.

Get them or kill them before they get us or kill us.

Where is the fourth choice?:
"It gives rights to everyone on the planet. There is nothing in the Constitution that restricts the rights in it to any group such as "citizens" or "legal residents".

Actually our rights are given by God (check the Declaration of Independence). The people give powers to the government, to maintain an orderly society. The Bill of rights articulate our rights which are inherent.

We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

Ignoring that the declaration of independence is not a legally binding document in any sense of the term, as a practcal matter it doesn't make a difference what our rights' ultimate origins are, the legal origins matter. This makes sense, even if you believe your rights come from God, how pissed would you be if a judge started enforcing his view of the bible. Remember, there are hundreds of Judeo-Christian denominations, each with their own interpretations and rules, which is why we Americans codified our laws in a common way, so we don't have argue on the finer points of God's will.

No meat on Fridays! It's in the Constitution!...or something.

Why do people feel the need to inject "God" into every single friggin thing? It's like a demented old man worrying about the Japs invading California, fakrissakes.

Just for entertainment, patsfan13, how exactly did God communicate such a message to the Founding Fathers? In dreams? Pony Express? Did God forget about the Americans who were here before the Europeans and the Africans who were treated like livestock? What the fu-k was he thinking or is he just poor at multi-taskiing?

Can we please just have ONE discussion without GOD?!
