This is a travesty. Saw it on BOR last night. Students were "required" to attend this forum. How does this happen in this country? This is why I'm an ardent supporter of vouchers and school choice. If I were a parent of one of these students I'd be extremely upset.

School district rethinks policies on CU panels

Boulder - School officials here are re-evaluating their policies for allowing panels from the University of Colorado's Conference on World Affairs to be held at Boulder High School, after a parent and a student complained that a panel about teen sex and drug use was too graphic and permissive in tone.

The controversy stems from an April panel called "STDs: Sex, Teens and Drugs." The discussion was dotted with frank talk and provocative comments about sex and drugs.

"I'm going to encourage you to have sex, and I'm going to encourage you to use drugs appropriately," panelist Joel Becker, a Los Angeles clinical psychologist, told the students. "And why I am going to take that position is because you're going to do it anyway."

Board president halts excerpts

Boulder High sophomore Daphne White and her mother, Priscilla, complained to the Boulder Valley school board last week about the panel, saying that the high school should not host events that tell students it is OK to use drugs and have sex.

"The panel discussion was a completely irresponsible and dangerous invitation to Boulder High students to have sex and take drugs," Daphne told the board.

At one point, school board president Helayne Jones told Priscilla White to stop reading excerpts from the panel discussion because the language was inappropriate for the meeting.

"But it was at Boulder High School," Priscilla White responded. "If they can listen to it, I think you can listen to it."

I kind of like this attitude, it'll make my job as a parent much easier. "Guys (I have two boys), just do what the hell you want. I'll ignore it and bury my head in the sand as you're gonna do it anyway".

Real World

This is what I'd want my kids to be "required" to listen to at school:

“I’ve been told that this is a very liberal high school, and I’m probably speaking to the choir by encouraging you to have healthy sexual behavior because most of your parents probably have given you similar views, but you know, when you are 13, 12, 13, 14, certainly one of the most appropriate sexual behaviors would be masturbation. Masturbate. Please masturbate.”

How about:

(condoms) “They’re tricky. And even though in your teens, even when your 16 and 17, you could have thousands of erections, sometimes 50 in a day, and you know because you counted. The act of putting on a condom, for me at least, makes me lose my erection almost every time. That’s the thing they don’t tell you about condoms. If you’re lucky enough to get them on, and you still stay hard, it’s hard to stay hard. And it doesn’t feel as good. And even that experience won’t teach you about condoms. Now, if any of you have been told, and one of the problems that we have right now is that religious communities are trying to give us information and sometimes that information isn’t correct. So I went to a very interesting panel this morning, and I just reference the story of Onan. You know that the sin of masturbation is the sin of onanism? Does anyone know what that Bible story was? Well, where it came from I found out today, was that you know these people were all Jewish because this was the Old Testament, and in the Jewish law, when a man dies, his brother automatically becomes the woman’s husband, so the brother inherits his brother’s wife and becomes father to that brother’s children. Well there was this one very wicked man named Onan, and Onan was evil in the following way: he had sex with his brother’s wife but he refused to make her pregnant because he was evil and it was a woman’s right to get pregnant, and instead, he spilled his seed on the ground. How they got from there to there, that that meant that masturbation is not okay, no one seems to be able to figure out, but that’s where it came from. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, and it doesn’t even address the issue of masturbation in women. So, it’s not a sin to masturbate in my world.

It's dangerous to expose kids to multiple points of view. I would stop them from watching tv, associating with other kids, and reading books. That way they'll preserve a myopic view of the world and be secure in their ignorance. If the panel only presented a one-sided view then it was wrong, but if it presented multiple views then it was okay, and it should have provoked intelligent discussion between kids and between kids and their parents, teachers, etc.

Real World

Yeah, exposing them to multiple points of view, and this trash, are one and the same. Get a clue. More extremism at it's best. If you can't put this drivel into the head of a 14 year old, then we might as well banish all thought! Sad.

It just makes parents' jobs harder. It's bad enough to have to compete with the temptations that the unknown and exciting present to kids - the last thing I need as a parent is some assshole authority type figure telling my kids that it's OK to try drugs, that makes it THAT much harder to disuade them.

Real World

Telling them at school none the less. Then people wonder why certain groups don't want vouchers, or school choice to be a possibility.

Perhaps some of you live in quaint little villages where kids don't have access to all sorts of information that's inappropriate. I think kids today see pornography on the internet, sex crimes on the tv, and get all sorts of info from their friends. To have adults talking about it intelligently and responsibly is not harmful, but again it must be intelligent, thoughtful, responsible, and the aim must be to get kids to take these issues seriously and understand that if they don't want to get STDs and other diseases they need to know the facts. Keeping kids in the dark I don't believe is any more effective then giving them information and encouraging to think responsibly.

You don't think it can help underscore personal responsibility for issues that kids learn about on the internet, on tv, and in the schoolyard?
