Some here have slammed the notion that what celebrities do or say have an effect on the general public. Going through any check-out counter in any large super market or Wallmart or any other such heavily trafficked place should be enough to disprove such a notion, but just to take it from the horse's mouth, so to speak, here is none other than our own AlGore on the topic of the role of people in the film-making and other arts to influence public opinion:
Gore delivers SOS to open Tribeca Film Fest
NEW YORK - The sixth annual Tribeca Film Festival opened Wednesday night at a gala hosted by former Vice President Al Gore as the festival expanded its social mission with a slate of global warming-themed films.
The festival, which was founded after the Sept. 11 attacks to rejuvenate Lower Manhattan, opened with the premiere of nine short films produced by SOS (Save Our Selves), an organization to raise awareness on climate change.
The night signified not only the opening of this year’s festival, but also the growing connection between filmmakers and the issue of global warming. Gore, who starred in the Oscar-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” said artists play an important role in the movement.
“Art, music, film, dance, poetry — all the arts — have long been our greatest tools to explore the regions of imagination that defy our efforts to think rationally about subjects that our emotions tell us are too painful to contemplate,” he said.

What TF is this now Al Gore has any credibility?? What always gets me about this stuff is how situational it is, Al Gore gets bashed for just about everything, but all of a sudden has credibility in this forum. Get consistent..

This is for those who say AlGore has credibility. Most of us ALREADY know how influential celebs are. Unfortunately.
For God's sake, even the Queen of England (and/or her nutty children) have made SIR Paul McCartney, SIR Bob Geldoff, SIR Elton John (maybe should be "LADY" Elton??), SIR Hannibal Lecter -- I mean, Anthony Hopkins (he's a great actor, but...). Maybe someday "SIR Marilyn Manson", or he's not British.
If celebrities have no credibility then why do they go around speaking and having all the world's cameras following them??
Richard Gere does his Lothario routine in India, pissing off a whole bunch of people, and now the whole world knows about it. He wasn't even LOOKING for publicity and he got it.
Celebs have the ear of the public. Too much. Unfortunately.

I think it's reflective of how superficial our culture has become. We have actors, singers and athletes running for political offices. Even politicians are trying to appeal to the rotten pop culture and adapting policy to suit the TV camera and network programming. It will never revert back to the way things were - more dignified, discreet, and professional. Like so much of our culture, certain sectors are melding together and will soon become indistinguishable from each other. Remember, there was a significant % of the population who thought Jed Barrett was actually the President.

Bingo, bingo, bingo, and BINGO again!! By Jove, I think you've got it.
The mindless culture of hedonistic pleasure-seeking is showing itself to be the biggest wrong turn in America's history. It needs to be corrected and NOW. Every second another young person loses their innocence to the false notion that external beauty, money, fame, position, political power, or empty knowledge are most important.
If we all could take a step over to the other side that awaits each one of us, we would see how utterly foolish and worthless all these external attributes are. Our spirit lives forever, while our body lives at best a hundred years or so. And what everybody's spirit needs more than anything -- in fact, it's the ONLY thing -- is love. Without love we are really dead. With love we live forever in joy, peace, and harmony with others and the world that awaits.
We need to wake up to what's REALLY real. That's why I like films like "Ghost", "Flat-liners", and "What Dreams may Come". They take a look at the eternal world that is right there -- right HERE -- next to us, and within us. We need to think about these things more to get back to what's important. Don't put it off until the last minute! By then it's too late to do anything about it.
