Default Elephant dung helps scientists develop new biofuel

You know, I knew when I saw this picture some years ago, that it would have a special meaning some day. After all these years of saving the url my prophecic sense has proven true.

Elephant dung helps scientists develop new biofuel

Wed Apr 18, 2007 9:53am ET

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Scientists in the Netherlands have discovered a fungus in elephant dung that will help them break down fibres and wood into biofuel.

Bioethanol firms currently extract sugars from crops like grains and sugar beet, but some are developing technologies to extract energy from fiber such as wheat bran, straw or wood.

Scientists working for Royal Nedalco, the Delft University of Technology and a firm called Bird Engineering have found a fungus in elephant dung that helped them produce a yeast which can efficiently ferment wood sugars.

"We really see this as a technical breakthrough," business development manager Mark Woldberg from Royal Nedalco, a Dutch alcohol maker, told a biofuels conference Wednesday.

Of course, these pics now have new meaning too.

I see a great Republican ad in those pictures. How about a "caption this picture thread"?

Is this where the expression, "I just sh*t a brick" comes from?

I always knew the iconography of the GOP and the phrase "bull***" could be successfully combined on a visual level...
