Default White House: Some E-Mail Is Missing

I find it hard to believe that the White House accidentally lost a number of emails. First, they must have some back up system in place; second, the emails should exist in multiple locations, including on mail servers and the local computer; third, some emails would likely have been printed out. It's pretty hard to lose an email.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n2675036.shtml

(AP) The White House said Wednesday it had mishandled Republican Party-sponsored e-mail accounts used by nearly two dozen presidential aides, resulting in the loss of an undetermined number of e-mails concerning official White House business.

Congressional investigators looking into the administration's firing of eight federal prosecutors already had the nongovernmental e-mail accounts in their sights because some White House aides used them to help plan the U.S. attorneys' ouster. Democrats were questioning whether the use of the GOP-provided e-mail accounts was proof that the firings were political.

Democrats also have been asking if White House officials are purposely conducting sensitive official presidential business via nongovernmental accounts to get around a law requiring preservation - and eventual disclosure - of presidential records. The announcement of the lost e-mails - a rare admission of error from the Bush White House at a delicate time for the administration's relations with Democratically controlled Capitol Hill - provides new fodder for inquiry on this front.

Scott Stanzel, a White House spokesman, says the Republican National Committee set up the accounts for about 20 Bush aides, such as Karl Rove and his deputies, who get involved in politics.

Wasn't there a scandal regarding this kind of missing e-mail stuff in Clinton's administration? Something about the Lewinsky thing? Or was it about Janet Reno's siege at Waco??

In his cartoon world, only wrong comes from the right. It's always"different" with him. While two wrongs don't make a right, he never can acknowledge a wrong from the left. Very transparent.

Partisanship has its advantages in the short term, but always shows up lame in the long term.

Anyway, we are all works in progress. No one is counted in or out just yet. Still time on the clock (though it varies from person to person).

So, what's your point. Are you trying to say that you stuck up for Janet Reno 8 years and, by golly, you're going to stick up for George Bush this time around? Or are you saying that Janet Reno was wrong and deserved to be sent to the mat for her email scandal, and the same is true for the people behind this scandal?

Since at least the Clinton years, I've supported government openness. I think that issue is fundamental to being a liberal who supports big government. As much as I detested the right-wing using $60 million of taxpayer money for what appeared to be a witch hunt, I supported the conservative Judicial Watch when it demanded that government records be brought into the open. I believe in honesty in government, and the only way to help ensure that is to keep as little as possible confidential.

It is CBS news, shouldn't we first be asking did they make this up to?

Anyone who knows anything about computer forensics will tell you that emial, as Patters said, travels across many different servers and a copy of it can be found if you dig hard enough.

Also when you delete something, it is never truely deleted, unitl your CPU overwrites the actual disk space that the item you deleted resided in (this was a complete suprise to a local gymnastics coach, who thought he could hid his child porn ways, be erasing his hard drive and then re-installing windows, yada, yada, yada, he just got thirty years, but I degress,,,)

Any certified computer forensic agent could find them, so once again I question the source of the story.

Overwriting, or reinstalling windows doesn't wipe out the HD completely. The best way to get rid of your old files is to toss them into an open furnace.

after reading 5 or 6 of these, it just becomes hysterical... they actually still believe they're succeeding in pulling the wool over on the American people, i guess...

The Bush administration's terrible luck with finding documents
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwa...ost_documents/

I feel -- in this vaguely intuitive sort of way -- as though there is some kind of a pattern buried within this set of facts, but as much as I search, I just can't quite figure out what it might be:

<snip>

And that is to say nothing of all of the extraordinary and unprecedented steps taken by the administration to justify the concealment of documents and other information -- efforts which, when successful, have made it unnecessary to claim that the documents were lost. But don't worry; it's all to protect us, all for our own good. There is simply no reason for us to know what our Leaders are doing.
