When Mary returned to Joseph, some months after leaving to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, wife of Zacharias the priest, Mary was pregnant. When Joseph asked her how she became pregnant -- since he knew he was not responsible -- Mary replied: "By the Holy Spirit".
Imagine if Mary had immediately revealed through whom the Holy Spirit had moved to impregnate her!! Women of that day in Israel could be stoned to death for having sexual relations out of wedlock.
