Sixth-graders decide that humans aren’t to blame

LONGMONT — Humans don’t cause global warming, a jury of sixth graders at Trail Ridge Middle School concluded Thursday after hearing opposing arguments from their peers.

“They’re pretty young for this kind of thinking. They did great,” paleontology teacher Ken Poppe said after the 40-minute “trial” in his classroom

With Earth’s warming accepted as a tenet, pre-teen “lawyers” and “scientists” debated whether humans have caused it.

Eleven jurors listened intently as prosecutors and defendants flashed contradictory graphs tracking global temperatures, carbon dioxide levels, polar ice cap statistics, volcanic activity and sea surface temperatures — all of which were found Wednesday in the school’s computer lab.


“The earth has warmed and cooled over many years. If it’s caused by CO2, why haven’t the charts shot up?” Poppe’s son and lead prosecutor Caleb argued during a rebuttal.

Good to know. The bulk of scientific opinion says global warming has a lot to do with man-made emissions, and a group of sixth grades says it does not.

It's a good thing someone caught the dissenting point of view, so the debate is fair and balanced.

Well the bulk of bureaucrats say that I have seen no polls reflecting that the bulk of scientist believe that. I hhave also seen no verification that their climate models are correct. So their beliefs are in the realm of faith and religion and not science.

Real World

I posted this because there was an article in here that was about teachers teaching kids about the no-doubt, Al Gore, Inconvenient Truth side of Global Warming. This, to me, seemed like a more even balanced way to bring the issue into a classroom. Actually having children debate both sides, versus teaching them only one or the other.
