Are you really so naive as to believe that the U.S. was acting selflessly? You really think war is the answer to all their prayers? What a violent God you must worship. What nation should we destroy next and how many more people should we kill to impose your ideas? I might add that prior to 1991, Iraq was the major enemy of Khomeini and religious Arabs in general, because Saddam gave women positions of power, had secular courts, and had secular education. Saddam was an awful man who believed there was a constant revolution going on. He dealt with sectarian violence in brutal ways and allowed enormous corruption into his regime, but he was no worse than the religious fundamentalists and in some ways he was better.

MOST Iraqis believe life is better for them now than it was under Saddam Hussein, according to a British opinion poll published today.

The survey of more than 5,000 Iraqis found the majority optimistic despite their suffering in sectarian violence since the American-led invasion four years ago this week.

One in four Iraqis has had a family member murdered, says the poll by Opinion Research Business. In Baghdad, the capital, one in four has had a relative kidnapped and one in three said members of their family had fled abroad. But when asked whether they preferred life under Saddam, the dictator who was executed last December, or under Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister, most replied that things were better for them today.

Only 27% think there is a civil war in Iraq, compared with 61% who do not, according to the survey carried out last month. ...

Where have you been Patters? This has been about liberating the Iraqi people... at least since Bush had to admit there were no WMD's. Why aren't we helping our repressed brothers and sisters in Saudi Arabia, though, while going after Iraq?

You don't want a reasonable discussion; you're playing games.

Can't I do both? There's no joke in my comment about Saudi Arabia. It's not exactly a beacon of freedom shining accross the Middle East, yet they're one of our biggest allies. In the meantime Iraq, no doubt a bad country but certainly not the worst - is invaded. Now you tell me that there was nothing involved but our desire to help the Iraqi people.

Don't be so narrow minded. The very point of this war was geopolitical change in the ME. If successful, it will help alter the political lanscape of the people in Saudi Arabia and Co. It already has in some ways, as many countries in the region have moved to permit elections & voting rights in ways which didn't exist before. Don't think that seeing people voting in Iraq, with their purple fingers, didn't push people in the region to demand the right to do the same. Why do you think Iran and Syria are so content to see us fail there? They cannot afford to have a prosperous, and free islamic nation on their doorstep.
