DuPont had invented a process to manufacture pulp paper, and the process wasn't compatible with hemp paper. He didn't care about the marijuana, he cared about industrial hemp. William Hearst just hated minorities, especially Mexicans, and used mariajuana to incite people against them.

Anslinger was the first Commissioner of the FBN (Federal Bereau of Narcotics). His crusade was about job security.

What are you saying about the 19th amendment, though? That was the one that gave women the right to vote.

True enough... it really bothers me how the Commerce Clause has been used to give the Federal government powers it was never meant to have.

They were able to criminalize marijuana by first taxing it, and then saying that because it's taxed, it falls under Congress' interstate commerce powers to regulate it (even if it never crosses state lines). This is where I give the late William Rehnquist credit... in the 90's the Supreme Court ruled that federal laws punishing posession of a gun near a school were unconstitutional because they exceeded the Commerce Clause. Then shortly before his death, when the Supreme Court ruled in Raich that the Feds were within their rights to regulate marijuana, he was with the dissenters in saying they shouldn't have that right.

Probably not. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in Walters v. Conant that doctors can't lose their license for prescribing pot. That decision is only binding in the 9th circuit (including California), but the Supreme Court rejected the Bush Administration's appeal.

Getting back to the original post, at least Bill Richardson supports Medical Marijuana.. it is a start, better watch out for "reefer madness" in those MS folks.

SANTA FE, N.M. - Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson, poised to sign a bill making New Mexico the 12th state to legalize medical marijuana, said Thursday he realizes his action could become an issue in the presidential race.

"So what if it's risky? It's the right thing to do," said Richardson, one of the candidates in the crowded 2008 field. "What we're talking about is 160 people in deep pain. It only affects them."

The legislation would create a program under which some patients — with a doctor's recommendation — could use marijuana provided by the state health department. Lawmakers approved the bill Wednesday. The governor is expected to sign it in the next few weeks.

Richardson has supported the proposal since he first ran in 2002. But he pushed especially hard for it this year, leaning on some Democrats to change their votes after the bill initially failed.

"Give him credit. It's not something you do because you're going to garner great political support for it. It is a bit controversial," said Thomas Mann, a political analyst at the Brookings Institution in Washington. By the same token, Mann says, it is not likely to hurt him in the Democratic contests.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — A decade ago, the Rev. Scott Imler co-wrote and organized the ballot initiative that made California the first state to legalize marijuana for medical use.
Now Imler shakes his head with dismay over what his law has wrought: scores of storefront marijuana shops across Southern California with menus of pot varieties for sale to anyone with a doctor's note.

"What we set out to do was put something in the statutes that said medicine was a defense in case they got arrested using marijuana for medical reasons," Imler says. "What we got was a whole different thing, a big new industry."

'Dispensaries' boom

Los Angeles has become a boomtown for pot stores. The number of "dispensaries" as they are known has gone from four in late 2005 to 98 one year later, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
