Chris Ofili's Holy Virgin Mary, painted in part with elephant dung, might be a better example than Piss Christ. Ofili is a Roman Catholic from Nigeria. Elephant dung in Nigeria is regarded like a farmer here regards cow manure, as fertilizer. The artist used it because for him it signified fertility.

I actually agree with this - the "dung" sculpture wasn't meant as an insult and was culturally not really a big deal from the artist's standpoint.
Of course, anyone that defends "Piss Christ" as being anything but a piece with the intent to shock and offend is just an absolute moron. I am not naming names, but the idiot on this board defending "Piss Christ" is not only a lowlife scumbag, but an intolerant bigot that gladly censors any and all opposing views.
