She was a dancer in some nudie bar. Being that she was a bit over-weight and not quite up to the place's standards, she was limited to days. When it was quieter. Co-incidentally, the old guy liked to go there when the place was quiet, probably because he was rich enough to end up in the local gossip column if it got out that he visited that sort of place.

Who knows what happened after that? Not every marriage is about living up to the standards of the Brady Bunch, and that's perfectly ok. It wouldn't surprise me if the geezer just wanted a pretty girl around and was willing to make subtle payments to get one and it wouldn't surprise me if she manipulated him the whole way. It actually would only surprise me a little that they were in love and that the coot's family were all a bunch of money-grubbers.
