I would say, "no". Insults may score temporary points by intimidating or throwing the game off of one's opponent, but sooner or later the greater viewing public feels repulsed by those who employ insults in order to win arguments.

I'll only insult the agenda driven. Even then, I'll try to do it with some fun in mind. Personally, I think insults are stupid, but when you discuss political issues, emotions tend to get involved, and thus people resort to attacking personally. The reasonable the people in the discussion, the more civil it will be.

My big problem with insults is the lack of clarity about the intent. I suspect that 95% of us on here are decent people, who would be good company in the pub. The problem is that there will always be one or two people (statistically, it is thought that 1% of the population is psychopathic) to whom that doesn't apply. For those people, the threats have a more sinister connotation.

Do I think insults win arguments? I would say no, as I believe that it takes away from the strength of your argument. I am significantly more likely to read a fellow poster's posts if he or she stays clear of insults, regardless of their political leanings.
