Re: There are noble protesters, and then there are scumbag protesters
KKK Byrd Is The Biggest Joke In Washington, the double standard from the democrats with that guy is unbelieveable, he could burn a cross tomorrow in front of Condi Rice's office and the democrats would find some way to justify it, but who cares, the people know.

But, Harry, have a heart. Sen Byrd said he was sorry. We should take people at their word.

Do you you fail to grasp the significance of the civil rights movement. You seem to have no idea what the country was like prior to civil rights. You seem to think that everyone but Byrd was enlightened about race. It's as if you know nothing of the riots, the murders, the protests, the court cases. The civil rights movement helped enlighten the country to the problem of racism. Before that, it was okay to be a bigot in many circles. In fact, it was codified and sanctioned by politicians and judges at every level.
By the way, do you hate Harry Truman now that you know he belonged to the KKK? What do you think of the fact that historians rank him among the best presidents? Are they wrong?
I don't hate Truman, I just think he's a scumbag for being in it, and were he laive today, like Byrd, I'd never vote for him.
FYI, I know plenty about what the Civil Rights movement meant to society. My guess is that 99% of sane people above the age of 15 know so to. My issue is with individual accountability. See, when a Civil War is faught over the inherent equal rights and freedoms of ALL Americans, it shouldserve as a means of knowing that color is of no significance. That some azzwipe 50, or 60 years ago, was a blatant racist because racism was tolerated, doesn't make it excusable. I've asteric'd the Founding Fathers accomplishmens because of the blatant hypocracy in both their toleration of slavery, and their ownership of colored human beings. Just cuz you can do something, does it mean you should? I'm sure you've seen me type that a time or two in here.

It was wrong of Cheney, but nothing most people got up in arms about. Or, perhaps, with your standards, you were disgusted by what he said?
Are you trying to say that using the word N!g*** and the F word are the same thing?

Not according to Frauders. To him it's only bad when a non-Dem says it. When a Dem says it, it's like saying the F-word.
Wistah, I find the N word to be one of the more derogatory, dispicable words around. I never use it. Unfortunately, the word has become common place in certain aspects of our society. I like some rap music, and they use the word like any other. Growing up, all my friends here in Chelsea used to call each other N***** like you and I would say buddy. I never understood it. White kids, calling black kids, calling spanish kids, etc... It just never felt right hearing that.

I use the F word but not the N word. It is laughable how you attempt and give Byrd a pass for being a racist still. You do a wonderful job proving my point Thanks.
This was almost as pathetic as giving T Kennedy a pass for murdering Mary Jo Kopechne, because he cares about womens rights and had passed a couple of liberal appropriations bills....'

Only in the sense that they're both offensive to some people. Some people found the f- word demeaning to the office of the vice-presidency. Byrd was wrong for using the n- word even in the way he did, but I don't think it's a particularly big deal. I gather it's an idiomatic term for "white trash," which can also be offensive. If someone used white n- and f-, I would probably regard each post as equally offensive, though context is of course important.

Congratulations, Patters.
You've just made the winning post for the "Most Bullsh-t In Five Sentences Ever" Award. Your bias in favor of the Democratic Party is insane and clouds your thinking on even the most basic things.

You might recall, if you were in this forum at the time, when we first set up rules, I was opposed to language censorship, including swearing. In fact, we don't have a rule because people generally agreed with my position. Further, in discussions about making English the national language, I've always come down in favor of it, because I think our language is the greatest and most progressive in history. I've been an entirely consistent here, Wistah. But, again, context is key. If someone wrote a hate-filled rant, with the word n-, I would obviously delete it. But, if someone used it in an idiomatic way or in a discussion like this, I would only censor with caution. (The only reason I'm not using the word here is because if I did, there are certain righties here who would attempt to exploit and distort my use of the word, something I don't want to deal with.)
See this article. (I saw a news story on tv about it, and it showed a number of black residents speaking in favor of the word n-.)
Now, when it comes to Robert Byrd, to hold him to the standard that Real World suggests would force me, as a firm supporter of gay rights, to be completely hypocritical since probably 90% of people prior to the 1970s took it for granted that gay was bad. All we can ask of people is that they learn and adopt new positions. In a way, that's the point of politics.
