Harry, who do you think is dealing with these kinds of issues? It's liberal groups, like Jesse Jackson's rainbow coalition; it's liberal politicians like Ted Kennedy who want to spend money to address the social issues; it's liberal women's groups who want to help single mothers; it's other progressive groups who want to create jobs, provide health care, and so on. What is your solution? Outrage? That's not a solution, that's a rant. People like you don't want to address the issues, but want to point out the inner city problems as a way of saying of reinforcing your own prejudices. If there's outrage, it should be directed at people like you.

Sorry, Patters, but it is going to take much more than just "more money" to solve these problems. This is the reason the problems don't get solved: our faith in the all-mighty dollar. Now the gangs are floating in money. From international drug gangs to the streets of East LA and greater New York. You've got drug lords with more sophisticated equipment than some governments can afford, and you've got street thugs rolling around in pimped-out Bentleys and stretch Hummers, with weapons arsenals that would make the Commandos of WWII jealous.

Not enough money?? No, this is a crisis of values. We are wandering like blind people trying to find the values that are most important, and every time we hear the chant for "more money" I cringe. Money is important, but having a clear set of high moral values is the only thing that will save us.

Alexis d'Tocquville from France toured the U.S. in its infancy and looked for the reason for America's rapid rise in the world. His conclusion, after searching the shops, markets, work-places, farms, industry, halls of government, and churches was: "America is great because she is good; if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease also to be great." I am afraid we are seeing the effects of our fool-hardy experiment with moral lassitude. Strong Godly families are the foundation for any stable society and nation.

Fogbuster, I agree with you, but certainly the values espoused by people like Jesse Jackson and Ted Kennedy are good ones. To introduce those values, we need to improve education, safety, health care, employment, etc. People like Harry Boy ironically hold the kind of divisive and bitter values that foster crime. The solution will come from the liberal model of addressing the root causes of social problems. Part of the conservative solution is to wait for there to be a victim and then punish the criminal. That has nothing to do with values. Another aspect of the conservative solution is to promote religion, but not only is that divisive, it's obviously not enough and never has been.

Now, now, Harry Boy, I bet you read about this story in the liberal media, just like you read about OJ Simpson, the snipers Malvo and Muhammed, and other sensational crimes that featured people of color. The media picks up on cases that have a dramatic element. Sadly, every day there are hundreds of crimes, and not all of them make the front pages. The media will always choose the one that's most sensational, regardless of color.

There are about 17,000 murders per year, and we learn about very few of them, even on Fox news. The ones we learn about are the ones that are over worst -- sex strangulation in Central park, snipers randomly shooting people in Phoenix, middle class students plotting to murder people, etc. I wish gang related crime was reported more because then maybe people would understand it's a problem that is not being adequately addressed.

I agree with the "liberal" approach of trying to solve problems. That is a noble desire, imo. Yet, the way to truly solve these problems can only be done by getting to the *roots* of the problems.

So far, Jesse, Ted K, and most other "liberals" have approached problems with the presumption that _MONEY ALONE_ is the root cause of problems. What I am suggesting is that something even more basic than money is the real root problem, and that something is "moral fiber".

The standard of thought and the behavior that thought supports defines who we are. If our thoughts are off base it is only going to produce actions that are off-based. Thus, we need to explore the core values of life itself. We need to open ourselves to hearing about where we come from, what our purpose in life is, and how we can achieve it.

For starters, I say that life is based on love, that no life can exist without love. But then, love itself has be broken down into "true" love (eternal, unchanging, and absolute) vs. "false" love (temporary, changeable, relative). Both currently exist in life, yet only one is healthy; the other is a fraudulent imposter that yields only heartbreak, pain, anger, and resentment. We need to create a society of true love, nothing less will work. That starts when "I" (each one of us) decide to live for the sake of true love and nothing less.

The Reason:

I agree with much of what you're saying, fogbuster, but it's not pragmatic. People like Jackson and Kennedy offer pragmatic approaches to solving the problem. I would advocate teaching ethics and civics throughout public school and perhaps requiring radio and tv to broadcast 5 minutes of ethics and civics for every hour of airtime. I would also advocate more work programs, daycare, health care, etc. But, all these things cost money. And, I would add that so-called Godly families are who got us where we are today.
