SUNDAY, Jan. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Scientists on Sunday reported the discovery of a new source of human stem cells that have the capability to develop into many different types of cells, including muscle, bone, fat, blood vessel, nerve and liver cells.
These stem cells, found in amniotic fluid, could one day lead to a readily available supply of stem cells that don't come with the ethical problems surrounding embryonic stem cells.
This is GREAT news if they can do it.

It is great news. Imagine the work that could be done if all available stem cells were allowed to be studied under all types of funding. Limiting science for emotional or religious reasons is stupid.

Yeah, sounds great but it's not legal here, remember? Some country like Britain or France will discover all kinds of cool stuff because they're allowed to do research. Then, twenty years down the road, the political scandal will be 'why does everyone want to travel to Europe to get surgeries done?'
Remember the Republican agenda: Gotta keep them Christians happy and stoopid...

I think you're mistaken. Bush never declared it illegal (he doesn't have that authority). He did ban using federal funds to study embryonic stem cells that didn't come from existing lines, but that only applies to embryonic stem cells, which these aren't.

There is NO REASON for the restriction of stem cell research, embryonic or otherwise. Restriction of scientific research is idiotic. Abortion is legal and happens all the time for reasons that range from morally distasteful to generally acceptable. I always wondered why they weren't available from spontaneously aborted pregnancies. Anyone know?

Nah, it would be in their interest. This one is entirely about the religious base. They can't do anything about abortion in one fell swoop, but they figure they'll do what they can to chip away. They really believe this one.
