Abramoff Reports to Prison Tomorrow; Offers Testimony on Democratic Senators

Convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff is scheduled to report to federal prison tomorrow, over the objections of federal prosecutors who say they still need his help to pursue leads on officials he allegedly bribed.

Sources close to the investigation say Abramoff has provided information on his dealings with and campaign contributions and gifts to "dozens of members of Congress and staff," including what Abramoff has reportedly described as "six to eight seriously corrupt Democratic senators."

The sources say Abramoff was about to provide information about Bush administration officials, including Karl Rove, "accepting things of value" from Abramoff.


Rove has denied any wrongdoing in his dealings with Abramoff. But the lobbyist visited the White House at least seven times, according to Secret Service logs obtained by Judicial Watch.

Abramoff has been meeting almost daily in secret locations around Washington with Justice Department investigators who are examining thousands of e-mails and documents, according to sources close to the investigation. The convicted lobbyist was spotted in downtown Washington, D.C., yesterday, carrying a computer laptop case.

But the prosecutors' easy access to Abramoff has now ended.

After granting several delays, the federal judge in Florida, who sentenced Abramoff to six years for fraud in a casino boat gambling scheme, has ordered him to report to prison tomorrow.

ABC News has learned that the court has granted a request from prosecutors that Abramoff be incarcerated at the closest prison to Washington, D.C., the Federal Correction Institute in Cumberland, Md., where Abramoff is expected to report tomorrow.

The liberal Raw Story also reported this. I think it's a bit strange that the Republican Abramoff wouldn't have made trouble for the Democrats before the election, but we'll wait until the facts come out. If the feds do too good a job cleaning up Washington, I'm not sure anyone will be left (except of the liberals).

Right now it is difficult to separate fact from fiction, it is being reported that there are efforts to "swiftboat" Murtha, so it will take some time to shake out. I am ambivalent about him, but have to honor his military service, that is something which cannot be minimized. No matter who is involved with Abrahamoff, dem or rep, should be shown the door.

Hannity & Combs on the Abscam scandal. They have footage of the FBI operation with Murtha. He doesn't take the money, but says he might "later", and clearly is less than honest with what he says. He clearly is looking to make this sheik legal through his political means in return for something. Certainly worth the watch. To me, this is what bugs me about politicians. His actions are less than ethical.

Some info on the Abscam Scandal:

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "Murtha was one of eight members of Congress lured to a Washington, D.C., townhouse by a team of FBI agents posing as representatives of a fictitious Arab sheik. They handed out briefcases filled with $50,000 in return for helping the sheik gain residency in the United States."

But, a videotape of a Jan. 7, 1980 Abscam-related meeting involving Murtha shows that the congressman's rejection of the offered bribe was less than definite. "I'm not interested. I'm sorry," Murtha told the FBI agent, but added that he meant "at this point. See Video.

"You know, we do business for a while, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't," Murtha said on the FBI videotape.

Near the end of the 54-minute video of the meeting, Mr. Murtha and Philadelphia lawyer Howard Criden return to the room after a brief absence. Mr. Criden then begins speaking to undercover FBI agent Anthony Amoroso, who posed as "Tony DeVito," the purported sheik's representative.
"John says it's OK for you to give me what's in the drawer," Mr. Criden says, according to the Spectator's transcript of the video.
"Is that all right, Tony?" Mr. Murtha asks Mr. Amoroso. Then, referring to Thompson and Murphy, Mr. Murtha says: "Let me make it very clear. The other two guys do expect to be taken care of. ... And you're gonna have to deal through [Mr. Criden]. Me, you've got my deal."
Mrs. Irey played excerpts from the video at a press conference in Washington yesterday. "Leaving a room where one has just been offered $50,000 in cash, only to return two minutes later with a bag man saying, 'John says that it is OK for you to give me what's in the drawer,' is not something done by a man who's not aware he's trying to take a bribe," Mrs. Irey said.
