Does pornography breed rape? Do violent movies breed violent crime? Quite the opposite, it seems.

First, porn. What happens when more people view more of it? The rise of the Internet offers a gigantic natural experiment. Better yet, because Internet usage caught on at different times in different states, it offers 50 natural experiments.

The bottom line on these experiments is, "More Net access, less rape." A 10 percent increase in Net access yields about a 7.3 percent decrease in reported rapes. States that adopted the Internet quickly saw the biggest declines. And, according to Clemson professor Todd Kendall, the effects remain even after you control for all of the obvious confounding variables, such as alcohol consumption, police presence, poverty and unemployment rates, population density, and so forth.

Sorry Patters, but I see this crap everyday, the internet has allowed sickos to find each other, the amount of child pornography being touted across the internet is enormous! So everyday, the internet is fueling this horrible crime, I've seen movie clips of children (not 17 year olds, but seven year olds) being forced to perfomr sexual acts so disgusting, that it actually makes grown men, who I've seen making jokes standing over corpses, wince, puke, & even cry.

One of the guys I arrested, is now facing 44 counts of rape of his 8 year old neighbor, so that might skew your percentages.

Well, based on the amount of explicit, degrading, hardcore material on the web these days, I wouldn't be surprised if what counted as rape before isn't considered it now.

I don't know that there's any causal connection at all. Seems like people in better off states were all getting internet access in the 90's just as violent crime was dipping. The internet doesn't prevent rape and it doesn't cause it either. Sure, it's another place for monsters to look for prey, but if not for the net they'd just find children another way.

If any of you guys want a dose or reality, go onto "myspace" or even Yahoo and create a profile for a 12 year old girl in your area and sit back and see what you get bombarded with.

I urge all parents to violate your children's privacy and look at their websites, read their emails, and do not let them on the net, unsupervised.

Your earlier point regarding pervs being able to find one another (and their prey) more easily via the Internet makes sense, yet that seems separate from the porn issue. I have never come across kiddie porn on the Internet (never searched for it, actually), but plenty of hetero adult porn appears readily available. I believe the "legit" adult porn industry is vehemently anti-kiddie porn because of its illegality and concern over all porn being lumped together. So in that respect it polices itself, which isolates kiddie porn further into the margins of criminality/perversion. Most kiddie porn is produced and pushed by private individuals and sickos outside the country, correct?

Tune you are indeed correct. I'm quite the Pornoholic. Morally, I find it terrible, but personally, WOOHOO! Anyhow, porn isn't for some, and it is for others. It's a matter of personal choice. I just think people who enjoy it should be conisiderate of the fact that alot of people find it repulsive. Internet porn sites are legitimate and legal. If not, the government would shut them down.
