It's been a long time since the righties here have actually defended the Iraq war. The typical cut-and-run-from-Bush rightie now seems to say something like the war was a good idea, but the Bush people handled it badly. (For an example of this type of thinking, see:
But, come on, remember your posts about mission accomplished, celebrations in the streets of Baghdad, the appointment of a new government, elections, the trial of Saddam Hussein, and so on. Were those things just footnotes among a host of tactical errors?
And how should the war have been carried out? Did you make a mistake in believing Bush was the man for the job? Do you wish you joined the liberal establishment and called for Rumsfeld's ouster? Do you wish you joined Kerry's call for more troops? Or do you think that Bush and his legions didn't have the balls to stand up against the likes of Cindy Sheehan? Why is that? Why were you guys so weak? Or maybe you think the war is playing out just fine? Maybe you like the idea of another Vietnam? Maybe you believe no one could have done better than Bush? Maybe you believe the women and children of Iraq deserve to live in constant fear? Maybe you now believe that the Iraq war was a mistake?

Say what you will, but Democracy in Iraq would have been a good thing for everyone in the world except the governments of Iran and Syria. If it had been an attainable goal.
In hindsight you would have to be crazy to defend the war....
BUT
lets not forget the mood of thsi country in the months following 9/11....there was legitimate concern of a terrorist attack usingw weapons of mass destruction against U.S. cities. At the time the concern was thta Iraq could supply such weapons, they certainlyhad a motive.
George Bush tried to do what he thought was the best way to decrease the likelihood of such an attack.
In hindsight it certainly appears to hjave been a major mistake, but teh thing you can fault the government with even more was lack of appropriate planning for post war Iraq.
Bush made a huge mistake...although I believe his motives were well intended.
IMO the war was justified and a 'good' thing to do ( not that wars are good, but sometimes necessary). I never felt it would be 'easy'. Stopping the establishment of democracies in the Muslim world is critical to the Islamist, and counties like Iran, Syria, and others.
I think the partisanship shown by the democrats has given aid and comfort to our enemies and made the battle in the ME that much more difficult. The enemy is counting on the leftist in this country to cause us to leave (and lose). The left is close to helping the terrorist achieve their goals. If the dems get a mahority in congress they will stop the war by refusing to fund it. The Islamist are thrilled by this prospect.

We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

However I thought some good could come of it if the proper behind the scenes plans were in place as to government transition.
Once I saw we had disbanded the Police and Military i knew all hope was lost for a short stay .... I estimated at least 5 years at the time.
Beyond that ... I was just hopefull we could stay long enough so they could stand on their own 2 feet .... that was not to be.
Also ... I was fearfull at the time of rumsfeld running the war. in fact I wrote the "Rumsfled must go" thread ... the 1st righty here to go against the operation.
I was suspicious why we were marching to Baghdad so quickly.
I was suspicious of Rumsfeld leaving the Generals out of the planning.
I was suspicious of disbanding the police and military.
In other words, there was never any intention for a quick removal of Saddam and a transition. The plan was to stay as long as possible for other plans Bush had up his sleeve. I wrote several threads thinking this concerned Central Asia ... I'm not sure if that was right or wrong because it has not played out. Perhaps it was just a plan for a base close to Iran?
So...if this all makes sense. I was against the war but saw some good could have come of it. Bush had no intentions of good coming of it which was in hindsight to bad for the world.
I still believe to this day that had our Generals been in charge, had a transition government been ready for a transition with a loyal police and military in the waiting, this could have been done with a bare minimum of casualties.
Why I believe the above is because it makes no sense how we marched in so quickly and how angry Saddam was that his military let him down, he makes this claim several times of the cowards. I believe all the above was in place concerning transition. I believe we screwed Saddam to the wall....then Bush pulled back(PLANNED), the only people who knew this was a ruse were Rumsfeld, Cheney & Bush. Saddam and Co. got away because of the anger towards Bush's ruse...AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
We made a mistake, now the Democrats and the Haters are turning on their own country and they will regret it in November.
WITHDRAW but never ever surrender.
Politics has a way of doing this Harry. To be fair, the republicans made the country weak in bring Clinton down. They made him a lame duck and also took away his prestige as the President of the United States.
I have been very clear of my opinion on these matters. it would be nice to see some balance between our rights of free speech in our democracy, our checks and balances, and the new trend IMO of attacking the President by the opposing party.
There is no doubt in my mind the republicans will repay the democrats if they win the Presidency...IMO this, if it happens, is and will be the darkest period of our democracy. When our 2 major parties don't care about weakening the country for political gain...another reason we need a 3rd party A.S.A.P.
I expect the democrats to do the same if the republicans win...as citizens we will only lose if this continues.
I was on the fence prior to the invasion. I for one never believed the rhetoric about WMD & stuff. I knew full well that geopolitical change in the region was mission #1. Anyhow, my brother, an ex-paratrooper and disabled vet, was gung-ho. I remember telling him that I did not like the precedent being set (us as invaders), and that war is always a can of worms. Like Forest Gump said about chocolates & life, can also be said about war, "you never know what u gonna get". Anyhow, I understood why we were doing it, and agreed that if successful, would be well worth resulting costs. But I also maintained that if the decision were up to me, I'd have decided against it. That being said, my support for the war stems from my belief that failure is not an option. Once we started it, we were obligated to finish the job. For innumerable reasons, we have to see it through.
