A Republican congressman knew of disgraced former representative Mark Foley's inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications.
A spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) confirmed yesterday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley (R-Fla.) was taking their e-mail relationship. Last week, when the Foley matter erupted, a Kolbe staff member suggested to the former page that he take the matter to the clerk of the House, Karen Haas, said Kolbe's press secretary, Korenna Cline.
The revelation pushes back by at least five years the date when a member of Congress has acknowledged learning of Foley's behavior with former pages. A timeline issued by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) suggested that the first lawmakers to know, Rep. John M. Shimkus (R-Ill.), the chairman of the House Page Board, and Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-La.), became aware of "over-friendly" e-mails only last fall. It also expands the universe of players in the drama beyond members, either in leadership or on the page board.
A source with direct knowledge of Kolbe's involvement said the messages shared with Kolbe were sexually explicit, and he read the contents to The Washington Post under the condition that they not be reprinted. But Cline denied the source's characterization, saying only that the messages had made the former page feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, she said, "corrective action" was taken. Cline said she has not yet determined whether that action went beyond Kolbe's confrontation with Foley.

I think you need evidence, not just wishful thinking, before you start making people hire lawyers, testify, and subject them to polygraph tests. Pelosi would be an idiot to allow a fishing expedition. This is a Republican scandal, a Republican-made mess -- let them dig themselves out their sewer. It's hardly the place of Democrats to help them in any way, and YOU KNOW IT.
Re: Gay R Lawmaker says Leaders knew about Foley in 2K...
Hey Patters why hire a lawyer? IF the dems had no knowledge of the Foley IM's giving a sworn affidavit should be no sweat. There is enough circumstantial facts to demand they give a statement, just as Hastert should even theough there is no evidence he knew of the IM's.
GJAJ15, WHY DID YOU LIE ?
There is no mention in the article you linkm that Kolbe told the house leadership anything about the IM's he had knowledge. I have seen other accounts of the Kolbe info (LA Times IIRC), where he states he didn't inform anyone else about the IM of Foley. If you have anything that backs upp your charge please link it.
You guys love to lie and misrepresent facts don't ya.

You always hire a lawyer because there are many kinds of innocent mistakes that one can make, especially if the people doing the questionning have some sort of agenda.
What circumstantial evidence are you talking about?
In the case of Hastert, there are several Republican Congresspeople and aides who claim they told him about their concerns with Foley. Hastert himself admits some knowledge. This is all reported in the MSM, as you know.
Re: Gay R Lawmaker says Leaders knew about Foley in 2K...
Sorry about the big lie, but my assumption had to do with this integrity thing that if Kolbe knew that something was seriously awry by a peer he would have reported it to the superiors. Guess I won't make that mistake again, I was always taught when I was in public service that the greatest sins are the sins of ommision.. because if you do not report then you are complicit. Guess the rules are different for the Republicans.

Well teh rules certainly appear to be different among Gay congressmen.
To Patters, apparently you will support Pelosi' sstonewall rather than full disclosure to clear the air. congrats, partisan to the end with no interest in the truth or the facts. Jimmy Carter would be proud.

That's you're evidence? LOL. Again, no one should have to testify unless it can be reasonably shown they have some involvement. If we're going to make others testify, let's start with every Republican Congressperson who socialized with Foley, Shimkus, Reynolds, or Hastert. Again, what's the circumstantial evidence you referred to above?
Re: Gay R Lawmaker says Leaders knew about Foley in 2K...
It is a set of facts that while not evidence raises questions that deserve an answer. There is no more evidence that Hastert know about Edmund's IM's than there is evidence that Pelosi knew about them. In Pelosi's case we have a page she appointed talking with Edmund about a book deal and Rogers claiming he contacted the DCCC about the Foley issue and has posted messages to the DCCC about Foley congratulating them on acting on the info he provided. Evidence of wrong doing, No. Raising Questions that can be fairly asked and need to be answered of course. Especially given the refusal of Pelosi to allow Freeh as an independent investigator.

BTW take sworn affidavits from every congressperson and all the staffers on the Hill for all I care. But start withthe leadership.
Dodge and weave and cover up , let's see where the cover up is and then have the guilty resign regardless of which party.
