I totally understand your point. Your position is one of life in jail versus capital punishment. No issues there. I just find it bothersome that individuals like Patters feel that justice was served. To me, this guy ever walking the streets is outrageous.
Who says he'll ever walk the streets? Who create the Florida law that allows that to happen? The only reference to it I found is here:
Interesting it says, "Now, under Florida law, Songer is eligible for parole and the murdered patrolman’s family, including his now grown daughter, have to argue before Florida’s parole board to keep him in prison." Was that the law 22 years ago when this case was tried?
Also, do you disagree with the Appeals Court that Songer should not be treated differently than other defendents who committed similar crimes? We have a system of justice, not a system of revenge. If you're looking for the latter, North Korea is probably a good place to look.
NYT Feb 6, 1985.
"Less than a day before he was to die for killing a state trooper in 1973, Carl Ray Songer won an indefinite stay of execution from a Federal appeals court today, and the United States Supreme Court refused a request by attorneys for the state to intervene. The United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta, voted 11 to 0 to have the entire court hear Mr. Songer's case along with that of another Florida death row inmate, James Ernest Hitch****."
When a court votes 11-0, that means that conservatives, moderates, and liberals all agreed.
