Default G.O.P. Leaders Knew in Late ’05 of E-Mail

This is great news. The perversion of the right-wing of the Republican Party is finally getting exposed. They're lying hypocrites. The people who put these right-wing pedophiles and their admirers into office buy into almost everything else that those perverts stand for. It reminds me of a conversation I once had with an American Nazi, who said to me that he liked Hitler, except for what he did to the Jews.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 — Top House Republicans knew for months about e-mail traffic between Representative Mark Foley and a former teenage page, but kept the matter secret and allowed Mr. Foley to remain head of a Congressional caucus on children’s issues, Republican lawmakers said Saturday.

The exchanges began with what Republicans now describe as an “overfriendly” e-mail message from Mr. Foley to the unidentified teenager. But news reports about the exchanges have led to the disclosure of e-mail correspondence with other former pages in which the discussions became more and more sexually explicit. Shortly after he was confronted by ABC News on Friday about the subject, Mr. Foley, who represented a south Florida district, resigned from the House.

The revelations set off a political upheaval, with Democrats and some Republicans alike calling for a full investigation of Mr. Foley’s conduct and whether House leaders did enough to look into it. Members of the Republican leadership sought Saturday to detail how they had handled the case in an effort to defuse the matter, even as it was emerging as an issue in Congressional races.

Among those who became aware of the communication in the fall of 2005 between Mr. Foley and the 16-year-old page, who worked for Representative Rodney Alexander, Republican of Louisiana, were Representative John A. Boehner, the majority leader, and Representative Thomas M. Reynolds of New York, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Mr. Reynolds said in a statement Saturday that he had also personally raised the issue with Speaker J. Dennis Hastert earlier this year.

I read that this AM, does conspiracy have any bearing on this? If you know something is wrong and do not do anything about it are you complicit?

This crap has happened too many times for anyone to turn their back on it, whether it be the Catholic Church... any organization or the US senate. Elected folks know better and need to be held accountable.

If you know there is a sexual predator preying on little girls and you keep quiet about it, then you are condoning it.

Will someone refresh my memory on Studds. Was he ever charged with being with a minor? What was the reaction from all politicos? What really happened? If possible, please answer without spin.

Ok, I"m answering my own question, here is what Wikipedia had to say.

"Studds is remembered chiefly for his role in the Congressional page sex scandal in 1983, when he and Representative Dan Crane were censured by the House of Representatives for separate sexual relationships with a minor – in Studds's case, a 1973 relationship with a 17-year-old male congressional page.

During the course of the House Ethics Committee's investigation, Studds publicly acknowledged his homosexuality, a disclosure that, according to a Washington Post article, "apparently was not news to many of his constituents." Studds stated in an address to the House, "It is not a simple task for any of us to meet adequately the obligations of either public or private life, let alone both, but these challenges are made substantially more complex when one is, as I am, both an elected public official and gay."

As the House read their censure of him, Studds turned his back and ignored them. Later, at a press conference with the former page standing beside him, the two stated that what had happened between them was nobody's business but their own.

Andy
Gary Studds not only propositioned but had sex with a 17 yr old male page. He was censured but was not asked by his party to resign. Indeed he was reelected after the scandal. Then there is Mel Renyolds who had sex with a 15 yr old girl, but wwas pardoned by Clinton.

If Foley is pardoned by Bush he should be scorned for it.

On the Foley scandal

On September 28, 2006, ABC News reported that in 2005 Foley had sent email messages, from his personal AOL account, to a then-16-year-old former Congressional page, asking the page to send him a photo of himself, among other things.[1] Foley submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on September 29, 2006 in the wake of news reports about the communications.[2] The congressman issued a statement, saying "I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent."

According to the Associated Press, Congressman Rodney Alexander, R-La., who sponsored the page from his district, told reporters that he learned of the e-mails from a reporter some months ago and passed on the information to Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Republican campaign organization.[3] Carl Forti, a spokesman for the GOP campaign organization, said Reynolds learned from Alexander that the parents did not want to pursue the matter.
[edit]

The content of the messages

After the email revelations, several pages came forward with a series of sexually explicit instant messages with other teenage male pages. According to ABC News, Foley wrote to one page: "Do I make you a little horny?" In another message, "You in your boxers, too? ... Well, strip down and get relaxed." The messages included references to sexual organs and discussion of masturbation techniques. [1] One former page said that people involved in the page progam had warned his class about Foley. Others said they had not reported Foley because he was a powerful Congressman.[2]

Former FBI agent and ABC consultant Brad Garrett commented, "Adds up to soliciting underage children for sex, and what it amounts to is serious both state and federal violations that could potentially get you a number of years." [3]

---So if I'm infering this correctly Studd's relationship was with a wanting participant and Foley was trying to solicite sex from various pages. Either way both are illegal, but Foley's seems more creepy.

I am willing to bet there is more than one page or underage male involved here, how that Hastert has asked the FBI to investigate(which is pretty honorable) I suspect that there will be some serious fallout regarding this. I also suspect that there are others involved in this scandal..Foley wanted to be involved in the whole exploitation of children venue, I wonder if it was to gain access to other victims or his way of atoning for his sexual deviance??

The relationship was consensual, but violated age of consent laws and presented ethical concerns relating to working relationships with subordinates.

This guy had the balls to turn his back on Congress while they were reading the charges against him, the Democrats in Mass went right back to electing him to office (he was a hero to some of them).

This is not an excuse for Foley, Foley should be destroyed, people should be warned if moves into their neighborhood.

This shows the double standard, Liberals usually defend people like Foley.
