Gotta be a coincidence, Bush, Rove and the rest of the crew always play fair... just look at all of the republicans under investigation for illegal activities.. look at the Ohio voting scandal... on an on... one thing I will GWB credit for is that his machine always orchestrates this stuff very well, and does it while we are distracted by other things. Gotta keep a wide view of what is going on, if we are paying attention to the UN, Gas Prices and the compromise in the senate is something else going on??

They'll start climbing after the elections. I think it's interesting that the radicals in the Muslim world, i.e., the terrorists and the Iranians, aren't trying to disrupt the oil flow. I think they like Bush. Bush gives them a cause for their people to rally around.

economy slowing down, hence lower demand for oil,

oil/gas inventories up in September higher than expected due to lower demand.

end of summer travel/vacation season, again less demand.

call it conincidence all you want facts are its called the law of supply and demand in economics.

It's all a conspiracy. This was the first time in global history that the summer season resulted in an increase in demand, and thus, an increase in prices. Amazing stuff. To think that the price would actually drop after a high demand summer driving season is dumb. The historic data just doesn't support a drop liek this. Bush wanted people to be pissed at him for over a year so that a month before the election, he could get gas to drop to "only" $2.50 and everyone would praise him and he could secure GOP votes. Afterall, he was an oil man right. He tells the ME & venenzuella how much to pump up, Exxon what prices to sell at, China, Pakistan, India's population how much to use, and investors when to loose money. All Bush's doing. He controls the world. Oh, and that business in Lebanon, Bush planned it. He got it to stop just in time for the election. The high inventories you hear about are all nonsense. People were buying oil cuz they thought it was oging to hit $100 a barrel like everyone was saying. Bush just got all the investment groups to lie that inventories were high so oil would drop and they could loose Billion of dollars in futures. Whats a couple of Billion dollars when you can help the GOP get a couple extra votes? Afterall, people who've been paying $3 a gallon for over a year, and despise the GOP for the disgusting job they've done in office, are going to now run to the voting booth to sign there life away to 4 more years of GOP lunacy all cuz gas has dropped 50 cents a month prior to the election.

Did you think of that all by yourself NEM?

heh, the reason "average" Americans are doing worse is because state and local taxes are increasingly taking more of their income.

States are forced to balance budgets. If only the fed had such constraints. This is why governors can usually be expected to be fiscally reponsible. As for average americans doing worse, you need look no further than rising health care costs and soaring inflation.

Rising health care costs I agree with. It's an issue with which a solution will be hard to find too. Inflation is also affected b the drastic rise in energy costs. Lets not forget that gas has doubled in the last couple of years. when you add the fact that oil itself is used in the production of hundreds of products & services, you can see why a large psike in inflation would take place. Furthermore, the boom in housing, which the fed has been trying to curtail with it's repeated bumps to the interest rate, is a huge factor that needs to be considered.

As for states, yes, they have to balance the budget, but they also do so with the aide of federal money. This year, $459 billion dollars of federal aid was budgeted for states. That doesn't take into consideration any supplemental requests individual states may apply for. My point is that states have the luxury of a sugar daddy making up for their inefficiency, whereas the Fed doesn't. States do a better job overall though, to that I would most certainly agree.
