Default Bush as Nero: Chimp fiddles while the world burns

The White House Chimp concludes: "Global warming? What global warming?" Meanwhile, another hurricane season is under way with powerful new threats to the American coast and worldwide evidence mounts legitimizing the Kyoto protocols (see below).

Extreme Conditions Create Rare Antarctic Clouds

SYDNEY (Aug. 1) - Rare, mother-of-pearl colored clouds caused by extreme weather conditions above Antarctica are a possible indication of global warming, Australian scientists said on Tuesday.
Known as nacreous clouds, the spectacular formations showing delicate wisps of colors were photographed in the sky over an Australian meteorological base at Mawson Station on July 25.
Australian Antarctic Division scientist Andrew Klekociuk said such clouds are occasionally produced by air rising over Arctic and Antarctic mountains in high polar latitudes during winter.
"You have to be in the right part of the world in winter, and have the sun just below your horizon to see them," he said.
Nacreous clouds can only form in temperatures lower than minus 112 Fahrenheit.
Meteorologist Renae Baker said a weather balloon in the vicinity of the clouds in the stratosphere about 12 miles above the Earth's surface measured temperatures as low as minus 124.6 F.
"That's about as cold as the lowest temperatures ever recorded on the surface of the Earth," Baker, who photographed the clouds, said in a statement.
Klekociuk said the rarely seen clouds, also known as polar stratospheric clouds, were more than just a curiosity.
"They reveal extreme conditions in the atmosphere, and promote chemical changes that lead to destruction of vital stratospheric ozone," he said.
Klekociuk said temperatures in the stratosphere, between 5 and 31 miles above Earth, would be expected to drop as global warming increases. Data collected over the past 25 years had reflected this, he told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.
"Over that time there has been a small decrease in temperature and that change is actually occurring faster than the warming at the surface of the Earth," he said.
The delicate cloud colors are created at sunset when fading light passes through tiny water-ice crystals blown along on strong jets of stratospheric air.
She said winds at the same height were measured blowing at almost 143 mph.

So what exactly are the other countries doing? Not talk, we know that is cheap but actually doing?

Also Clinton and Gore your hero's who are SOOOOOO worried about it, so worried in fact that they didn't even bring the Kyoto treaty up to the Senate.
Was this Bush's fault? Why didn't Algore use his superior intellect to make the case to the Senate? Even though the treaty wasn't brought up to the Senate, by Clinton/Gore, the Senate rejected the treaty 97-0.

And this is Bush's fault?

We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

I agree with your post 100%. I agree with Kyoto for local environmental and health reasons related to the burning of fossil fuels. But Clinton, Gore and Bush are all at fault for not signing on to Kyoto. THe health of Americna men women and children would be improved if we curtailed the use of fossil fuel and switched to "nucular" generation of power now, and decomission the oil/coal plants. That should be reason enough to move in this direction.

Global warming is a natural cycle and the results may be partially made worse and/or accellerated by human impact, but it's gonna happen sooner or later.

No, I'm not suggesting that at all. But he IS sticking his head in the sand when he could help lead the world toward a workable solution that may stem the tide of environmental catastrophe.

Not only that but he and all of his spin doctors are in complete denial, spend a lot of time discrediting Gore instead of looking at it intelligently. The reality is something is happenning here and not sure what it is. For example, this summer I have seen 3 thunderstorms so far that are huge and go on for hours, I do not remember seeing anything like that in my life. Perhaps it is cyclical, but it seems we are facilitating the process. A lot of this weather is more than coincidental or cyclical.

Which workable solution is that?

I hadn't really heard of solutions that didn't involve a drastic change (reduction) in the amount of energy consumption ie reduction in economic activity.

Reduction in energy consumption does not equal reduction in economic activity. That's an energy provider generated (pardon the pun) myth. There have been many studies that show increased conservation measures would and do reduce consumption. Many of these are in place in companies that recognize the related cost savings.

Here I go again, but the need for more energy should not be satisfied by burning of fossil fuels. Wind and solar farms as well as Nuclear fission power should be used wherever possible until the problems related to atomic fusion can be resolved. You want to talk about transforming the world. Unfortunately for the US, the English and Russians are ahead of us in the research of fusion containment fields.
