Romney is simply proving how out-of-touch he is with regular people. None of us would use the term in ordinary speech as we know it's probably a derrogatory phrase.
I have never in my life known that that was an insult. I guess I am just not as knowledgeable as you are when it comes to racial slurs.
Furthermore, since the context by which he used the term fits the dictionary definition of the word perfectly, it's impossible to argue his intent was an insult.
Like I said before... if you're a democrat you can be a Klansman and no one will care.... but if you're a Republican and you use a term that had a negative connotation 50 years ago, and the liberal hypocrites will get all up in arms.

I agree.
I grew up in and Irish house and I've been in construction all my life _ I've heard some racial slurs that aren't even made up yet. Some were so nasty, they were only utterred once - by the person who made it up.
I actually said that I didn't think he meant it as an insult. I doubt he has ever verbally insulted anyone in his life. I still can't stand him, but he's not all evil yet.
But I would be lying if I said I didn't know of any negative connotation to the word "spade".
Oh, so what you're implying is that the black population of Roxbury is prone to violence...? Please take your disgusting, racist beliefs elsewhere.
Congratulations for spinning this whole thread around so that I am now the racist. As you can tell by my 1000 plus posts, I always post disgusting racist beliefs. I'll let all the members here be the judge of that.
May not be in a dictionary, however it is considered offensive by African American people... that bible of the right the Boston Herald seems to think it is a big deal also.. so before everyone dismisses it as a left wing imaginery thing, check it out. FYI cannot find mention of it in the Globe, so guess the right wing mainstream media drive by press thinks it is significant.
Prominent black Bay Staters are outraged by Gov. Mitt Romney’s use of the words “tar baby” to describe the Big Dig as he stumped for presidential points in Iowa.
“Tar baby is a totally inappropriate phrase in the 21st century. If Calvin Coolidge didn’t use it, why the hell should Mitt Romney?” railed Larry Jones, a black Republican and civil rights activist.
Tar baby can refer to a sticky mess, but it also has been recognized as an epithet to humiliate black people. President Bush’s spokesman Tony Snow learned that in May when his expression, “I don’t want to hug the tar baby of trying to comment on the program,” raised the hackles of political
Well the HERALD itself used the "tar baby" "racial slur" when describing the Big Dig a few years ago...so there you have it lets get the rope for the hanging...oh wait my apologies if any of my words offended someone by historical standards...or my conjunctions are improper thereby causing someone of some race, religion or culture...sexual persuasion...oh heck humanity or animal kind or.....jeeze if I offended anyone or anything in the universe......
"Fehrnstrom produced copies of editorials and columns from Boston newspapers using "tar baby" in a context similar to Romney's. One example from 2004, a Herald editorial, used the term about the Big Dig itself."
People need to get a life. It is by far and away been referred to as a sticky mess...in fact I have never heard of it as a derogatory term for African Americans....though I frequently hear the N word everyday and that is OK I guess? But "tar baby" because somewhere at sometime some person used it in a degrogatory manner? I mean where is the outrage at the definitiopn in the American Heritage dictionary? Lets correct this great injustice! It obviously is a purely hatefull term that must be expunged. Get real people...and the outrage of the herald at someone using the term! Oh yeah we used it ourselves...oh nevermind.

Well, then please share with us what exactly you meant when you said I should go to Roxbury and say such words. The implication seems to be that my physical well being would be threatened in a black neighborhood.
See, that's the type of soft bigotry liberals are constantly guilty of. The condescending remarks towards groups of differing ethnicities. I suppose now you'll tell us that you have many black friends and they are all very articulate...

Let's be honest.
I'm sorry, I don't see the majority of americans voting for a morman named after a piece of baseball equipment
