From the WhiteHouse...not yet officially online they say. Interesting compact being prepared...does Fidel have 1 foot in the grave?

The Compact with the Cuban People

A message of hope from the United States to the people of Cuba.
A clear statement of principles to reassure Cubans that the U.S. stands with them in their desire for freedom.
The Compact directly speaks to the Cuban people.
The message to Cubans is that they will be secure in their homes and can count on friendship and concrete help from the United States as they move to a democratic transition, including humanitarian aid and assistance in economic recovery, and in conducting free elections.
The Second Report of the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba (CAFC II)

This document sets forth specific assistance and programs the United States can offer to advance freedom and democracy in Cuba.
Implementation of the CAFC II recommendations will hasten the day Cubans will be free to elect their leaders. The recommendations include:

Empower Cubans to prepare for change.
We will encourage and support Cubans who want change by providing uncensored information through conventional and satellite broadcasts, the internet and by strengthening democratic movements. Over the next two fiscal years, 2007-2008, $80 million will be provided to support these activities.

Build support for transition to a legitimate, democratic government.
We will work to build on the momentum created by Cubans themselves for genuine democratic change in their country by encouraging other democracies to support the right of Cubans to define a democratic future for Cuba.

Undermine regime finances and survival strategies.
We will improve enforcement of existing sanctions to maintain economic pressure on the regime to limit its ability to sustain itself and repress the Cuban people.

Planning support for a Cuban Transition Government.
We will be prepared to offer prioritized assistance to a Cuban transition government that moves rapidly to free and fair multiparty elections, and we will update and adapt our preparations to keep pace with Cubans themselves in an ongoing process to support Cubans in their transition to freedom.

The report details assistance the United States Government will offer to a Cuban Transition Government:

Humanitarian needs: Preparing to help a Cuban Transition Government begin to address the immediate water, sanitation, health, food, shelter and education needs of the Cuban people.

Free and fair elections: Helping Cubans overcome obstacles and create a stable, open environment where free and fair elections can take place.

Market-based economic opportunities: Helping to stabilize the Cuban macroeconomic condition and fostering conditions for private enterprise to grow.

There was a rumor around the markets today that Castro was dead. Obiviously nothing announced yet. One of these day s the rumor will be correct.

Fidel has had one foot in the grave since the 50's. He's like Hyman Roth. I remember reading a political cartoon once that had 9 panels and each panel had 1 word being spoken. The first panel had Ike, the 2nd panel had JFK, the 3rd had LBJ, etc, up to Clinton. The message when read in it's entirety said something to the effect of "Don't worry, Fidel will be gone any day now".

Never understood the Cuba Embargo thing, does anyone believe that Fidel & family do not have all the food, medicine and other necessities that they need? The only people who suffer from an embargo are the poor & old folk, primarily the single moms. This whole thing has been nothing but pandering to the huge Cuban vote in Florida.. means nothing else.

VERY stupid...it's been a few decades too long..silly maybe even a closer word for it..And you are right who suffers from it...I don't think THAT helps the US all that much..but no one has the guts to change an incredibly outdated policy...

The left wing sore losing liberal socialist wife swapping new democrats out in Hollywood love him, he is their last great hero.

He still has chickens running through his living room.

Uncle Teddy spent many hours looking in the mirror and practicing how to deliver a speech like Fidel used to do, "Yelling, bellowing and spittng all over the microphone and his shirt" Hillary now also does it.

What do "Liberals" think about the way Cuba has handled the AIDS thing.

Would "Liberals" handle it the same way here in America, it seems to be working?

If you commit a crime in Cuba that warrants the death penalty, you go to court, if found gulity, you are sentenced to death, you are exacuted the next day.

In America murderers are exacuted 20 years after being found guilty

IF Fidel is dead, do not celebrate too much, his brother Raul, has been his enforcer forever, and would assume the "Presidency".

Once again I blame this entire situation on the Washington Nationals who cut Fidel, if he was allowed to follow his baseball dream, he would have never made Cuba the "paradise" that it is. Who was the coach of the Nationals back then, I keep drawing a blank on his name............

I actually met Fidel a couple of times on his way to the UN. Each time he was very personable, and did not trust the US in any way, up to and including bring his own food, including livestock with him on his presidential plane.
I once told him that El Duque was pitching against Aroyo that night at the Stadium. He was very excited and asked me under his breath what channel it would be on (His visa did not allow him to travel more than a few blocks from the UN). He is a brutal dictator, and is responcible for the murder of thousands, maybe even tens of thousands, just don't tell his "useful idiots" in Hollywood that.
