- to attempt to lure the suspects out of hiding
- as a means of launching further attacks on the press
- because of a split in thinking in our intelligence services as how best to proceed
- as a means of warning the public
- as a means of scaring other terrorists
- as a means of tracking down leaks in the intelligence community
?

It's also possible it was an irresponsible leak, but that's only one of many reasonable possibilities.

Frankly it is unlikly. There are 5 suspects if they are caught now it is not a + for the administration. The NK missle deal is not a negative for the administration why take the spotlight off that. If the leak is for partisan political puposes leak it after Labor Day when the camppign is in full swing.

The tracking down leaks could be a valid point. They busted Mary Mc Carthy this way. Then there is the isue of finding the leakers in the Swift situation and comms monitoring program.

In my view this is a continuation of the reckless behavior by the media.

Also Patters it does no good to let the bad guys know we got onto them by monitoring chat rooms in arabic. They will now change their means of communication, making the job of protecting us that much more difficult.

I thought it is rather disingenuous for FTW to single out New York Times without also mentioning that the following NY-based newspapers did not have any article about the terrorist plot to blow up the Holland tunnel:

Right-wing Wall Street Journal did not have any article

Right-wing New York Post did not have any article

Newsday did not have any article

AM New York did not have any article

Is anyone at the NY Post even an American???

The fact that NYC's 'lefty' newspaper had this story but decided to sit on it to avoid intefering with what could be a critical investigation is getting lost in the flame fest. Thank you paper of record!! I guess not all left-leaning organizations can be lumped in with NAMBLA.
