Intercept Emails & Assassinate americans without any judges Wow
Imagine if Bush approved assassination of AMERICANS and getting their browsing history without a court order. Now people screamed when Bush sought to intercept calls to countries like Pakistan and Iran, or calls from those countries.
Many were outraged that enemies captured on the battlefield were held without hearings. Imagine if Bush had claimed the right to assassinate American citizens without an arrest and trial.
President Obama campaigned for office on an explicit promise to rein in these abuses. “There is no reason we cannot fight terrorism while maintaining our civil liberties,” his campaign wrote in a 2008 position paper. “As president, Barack Obama would revisit the Patriot Act to ensure that there is real and robust oversight of tools like National Security Letters, sneak-and-peek searches, and the use of the material witness provision.”
Where is the “robust oversight” that voters were promised? Earlier this year, the administration successfully pushed for crucial provisions of the Patriot Act to be renewed for another year without changing a word. Voters had every right to expect the president would roll back authority that had been clearly abused, like national security letters. But instead of implementing reasonable civil liberties protections, like taking requests for e-mail surveillance before a judge, the administration is proposing changes to the law that would allow huge numbers of new electronic communications to be examined with no judicial oversight.

and (2) those "in a Yemen or in a Pakistan or in Somalia or another place." In other words, the entire world is a "battlefield" -- countries where there is a war and countries where there isn't -- and the President's "battlefield" powers, which are unlimited, extend everywhere. That theory -- the whole world is a battlefield, even the U.S. -- was the core premise that spawned 8 years of Bush/Cheney radicalism, and it has been adopted in full by the Obama administration (indeed, it was that "whole-world-is-a-battlefield" theory which Elena Kagan explicitly endorsed during her confirmation hearing for Solicitor General).
Anyone who doubts that the Obama administration has adopted the core Terrorism policies of Bush/Cheney should listen to the concession -- or boast -- which Brennan himself made in his interview with Lake:
Mr. Brennan toward the end of the interview acknowledged that, despite some differences, there is considerable continuity between the counterterrorism policies of President Bush and President Obama.

We all warned you of sweeping Presidential eavesdropping powers when Bush was in office. You all replied with
"I havent done anything wrong, so I have nothing to hide"
Thanks a bunch!
THREE PEOPLE that areTargets for assasination? Hmm...I seem to recall Cheney operating an assasination ring out of the white house...in the name of national security...
I dont like this anymore than you do. The sad thing is, that I get to read the rambilngs of conservatives about this about 8 years too late.
The last time a president gave up sweeping powers will be the first time....

OT: Washington?

13, you're absolutely correct that those who opposed Bush's trampling on civil rights should be up in arms over this. Similarly, those who were OK with Bush's actions probably shouldn't be complaining about this.
In fairness to both sides, though, that's basically what I've witnessed. The few people I've heard pointing out Obama's transgressions have been on the left -- and, yes, these things have been pointed out and many people were unhappy about it. And I haven't witnessed any hypocrisy from the right yet on these issues.

Which AMERICANS was Cheney targeting?
So since it is Obama you are ok with this, right?

There is no excuse for this. Even thought I trust Obama more than Bush, the fact is that there are plenty of motivations for politicians and law enforcement people to abuse such laws. It's good that liberal publications like the New York Times (as well as at least Huff Post and Rawstory) are writing editorials calling for changes. It reminds us that liberals aren't lemmings and fight for what is right rather than blindly follow follow their leaders, like conservatives blindly followed Bush's spending and war policies.
