Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. A couple of guys were out to get a reaction from a politician so they could use it for their agenda and they got what they wanted.

Bob did not assault the student. He's not guilty of that, what he is guilty of is battery. Assault is the threat of physical violence, battery is that violence realized.
