Considering this is an election year, Deval Patrick may think twice about a veto when 84% support the issue. !
84% must include a lot of left leaning loons & at least a half dozen moonbats.

I've got to read more about this, cuz it was just a couple of weeks ago that they voted down a bill that would have required the state to verify citizenship, for anyone applying for benefits. So what this bill does, or does not do, is what I'd like to truly find out.

In a measure of just how politically potent illegal immigration has become, the Senate, on a 28-10 vote, replaced a far milder budget amendment it had passed Wednesday. The sweeping provision, if it makes it into law, would toughen or expand rules that bar illegal immigrants from public health care, housing, and higher education benefits.
The amendment would also clear the way for courts, the state attorney general, and even average citizens to get new tools, including an anonymous hot line, to report illegal immigrants or companies that employ them to the government.
The prospects for the measure to become law, however, are uncertain. Not only would it have to make the final budget plan lawmakers approve for next fiscal year, but it would also have to survive a possible veto by Governor Deval Patrick, who has been cool to such initiatives.

?I have no doubt he would veto it in a non-election year.
And risk alienating his base voter support from the college towns and the minority laden cities? No chance in hell he would risk losing them to Cahill- that would open up the door for Baker to win. That also doesn't factor in him trying to get a job down in Washington in the future, a signing of the bill would make him too toxic for any appointed position especially with an election coming up in 2012.

This passed easily in the senate (almost 3-1 in favor of the ban).
After the recent poll, it just may pass the house in their next vote.
Passage doesn't really matter if he vetoes the bill, all it does is act as a smoke screen for the upcoming elections to appease the voters. "hey lookie here majority! I voted for this bill, I deserve your vote!" No matter what happens to the bill t's a win/win for the legislature.

I agree passage does not matter if he veto's the bill.
If 84% of the people approve of this ban, a veto will only hurt him and
he knows it.
It is the independents who will decide the election.
If 84% approve of the ban, I bet that number is close to 90% of
independent voters.
Who else is his voter base (urban voters, college students, left wingers)
going to vote for? I don't see Cahill or Baker taking many of those votes
even if Deval signs the bill, joins the NRA, & buys another Cadillac on
the tax payers dollar.
Remember.... the urban voters re-elected Diane Wilkerson after
she was a convicted of federal tax evasion.
