Default Texas doctors opting out of Medicare at alarming rate

So now I'm SURE congress will be scrambling to find MORE MONEY!

Yup, that's all we need now.

Texas doctors fleeing Medicare in droves | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

"Texas doctors are opting out of Medicare at alarming rates, frustrated by reimbursement cuts they say make participation in government-funded care of seniors unaffordable.

Two years after a survey found nearly half of Texas doctors weren't taking some new Medicare patients, new data shows 100 to 200 a year are now ending all involvement with the program. Before 2007, the number of doctors opting out averaged less than a handful a year.

“This new data shows the Medicare system is beginning to implode,” said Dr. Susan Bailey, president of the Texas Medical Association. “If Congress doesn't fix Medicare soon, there'll be more and more doctors dropping out and Congress' promise to provide medical care to seniors will be broken.”

I don't see the doom and gloom. The health care industry is changing. Texas also offers programs for medical grads of foreign and American universities to get their licenses quickly in exchange for treating the poor. The concierge type services that many doctors are opting for offer the chronically ill (and the well-to-do) a higher class of service, but not necessarily a higher quality. Medicare payments do need to be straightened out, but the fact is the vast majority of doctors accept Medicare.

Once health care reform is implemented, I think it will be easier to see in what ways it impacts the health care industry, and then adjustments will need to be made. Any adjustments made before that will just be bandaids.

That's OK. I'm sure those seniors who wanted the government out of their healthcare will be pleased with it. And the state of Texas will be happy to deal with any repercussions, since they dislike the Federal government so much down there.

It is interesting that the State of Texas has enacted "Tort Reform", and has effectively lowered the malpractice rates of insurance for medical professionals.. at last count the insurance companies are paying out less, Hospitals and Doctors are paying less...

The patients are still waiting for the cost savings to trickle down.. sometimes you just have to suck it up.. find it interesting that people will complain about how unsustainable certain systems are, but there is greed in other areas....

There is also that hypocratic oath thing..

An effort was to bring some intelligence to the issue of Texas Doctors Refusing Medicare and you bring in this worthless comment..

Illegals are not eligible for Medicare...

Why hijack your own thread?????

I'm sure there are some extra costs. On the other hand, there are many illegals who have taxes deducted from paychecks, and many illegals return to Mexico for their healthcare.

The doctors see that they will lose money with obamacare. Anyone here want to lose money when they work?

I've seen an interesting mantra develop here among a few folks. They say that having social programs cut should please those who oppose them. However, wouldn't that be the case only if they were reimbursed for all the money they were forced to pay into said program, specifically social security and medicare?

This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”
