"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." Leo Tolstoy, 1897

Um, actually yeah there is plenty of "doubt" so please don't fool yourself into thinking your opinion speaks for everyone. There was nothing obscenely unreasonable about an illegal busted on multiple drug charges (among other arrests) being detained for all of 5 weeks prior to deportation.
Oh yeah, I forgot. You only support adhering to the law with it doesn't interfere with your political beliefs.
Why should an illegal immgrant (i.e. non citizen) have access to an attorney and due process? He should certainly have human rights, meaning he should be given 3 hots and a cot while being held, but I just don't see Constitutional rights as something that should be extened to illegals. I guess you think he should have the right to vote too?
Wait, what am I saying? Of course, you liberals want illegals to have the right to vote... and get drivers' licenses, state-sponsored tuition breaks for universities, etc.
You're the last person who should be lecturing us about Constitutional rights, since you apparently are completely unaware that Constitutional protections extend to non-citizens on US soil.

I wish I could be illegally detained for a couple of months each year.
Everyone is arguing whether or not the law applies. That doesn't really matter. The only ridiculous part of this whole thing is the monetary award. I would love to know how the judge came up with that figure.
According to the link it was a settlement. You can't blame the judge for signing off on something both sides accepted. Off the top of my head I'd guess the city initially offered $200/day and he demanded seven or eight figures. Then the city countered with the lowest figure that would cost them less than what they'd pay in court costs. They'd already concluded that they'd screwed up. So their offer was built on the notion that some amount would have to be paid. I wouldn't put any more context into that number than it being related to what NYC figured a trial would cost.

Isn't that wonderful???? Harsh laws - what could be more beneficial to the citizens of a country than harsh laws on illegal aliens?
Harsh laws on citizens, of course, since the two usually go hand in hand.
For instance - since you mentioned these countries in particular I'm assuming you'd find it to be a good thing if the US adopted some aspects of their legal system - maybe you'd find these things to be a good thing, too.
If you were a citizen of NorthKorea - and you spoke against the government on a web site such as Pat's Fan you could, conceivable, be put to death. North Korea has laws stipulating capital punishment and confiscation of assets for a wide variety of "crimes against the revolution," including defection, attempted defection, slander of the policies of the party or State, listening to foreign broadcasts, writing "reactionary" letters, and possessing reactionary printed matter. The Government prohibits freedom of speech, the press, assembly, and association, and all forms of cultural and media activities are under the tight control of the party.
If you were a citizen of Iran you would live under Sharia Law. You would also get 74 lashes for posting pictures of government officials which mocked them in any way.
If you were a citizen of Afghanistan and happen to be gay, you would most likely be put to death if it is discovered.
If you were a citizen of Saudi and have an adulterous affair you would be stoned to death.
If you were a citizen of China you could be put to death for criminal offenses, including nonviolent property crimes such as theft, embezzlement and forgery without a trial.
If you were a journalist in Venezuela you would be imprisoned for writing any article "harmful" to the state. If you are citizen and you are critical of the president you would spend the next 8 years in jail.
If you were a citizen of Cuba and you wrote something against the president on an Internet web site you would spend the next 3 years in jail.
Sounds like a great trade off to me.
So basically for you, it's a slippery slope? Sorry to tell you, but that's a logical fallacy. Just because we adopt harsher laws on illegal immigration doesn't automatically mean that we are going to have people put to death for speaking out against the government on a website, adopt Sharia Law, put gays and adulterers to death, adopt the death penalty for thieves and white collar criminals, and imprison journalists for writing articles harmful to the state.
The big difference, Mrs., that you fail to consider is that, in this country, in order to adopt harsher illegal immigration stances, they would have to be voted in. That's not the case at all in the countries mentioned.
