At approximately 11:40 a.m. Thursday, police and firefighters were on scene evacuating Hanover Street from Maplewood Avenue to Market Street, and had surrounded a Greyhound bus while watching a subject inside, according to emergency radio communications.

Bomb scare Portsmouth 05/06/2010Police Chief Lou Ferland said police received information that there may be a subject on the bus with a bomb.

According to Portsmouth Police Cpt. Mike Schwartz, 17 people were on the bus, the driver was not on board during the response, and there has been phone contact with a passenger. Schwartz said the bus had stopped in Portsmouth during a trip from Portland, Maine, to Boston, Mass.

Man...what is UP today? First I wake up to news that some bridge in NY is closed because there's a disabled and suspicious van parked on it, then the Seattle Airport is evacuated due to an abandoned bag which ends up holding a smoking battery, next there's some plane returned to a New York airport because there's supposed to be someone on it who's on the "no fly" list (only there isn't,) and now this.

I'm stayin home for the rest of the day. MrP can find his own way home.

It is....the hysteria surrounding recent events, however, is not so great. The cops and Feds and military people are out in full force today...helicopters flyin low and everyone lookin all business-like. My cats hate the Hueys - someday they're gonna fall out the window trying to get at them and fall to their death - another casuality in the War on Terror.

Now don't get me wrong, I fully approve of the War on Terror, I just don't like the War Fueled By Hysteria all that much. I believe the government truly does have a handle on it - as much as anyone can be prepared for each and every eventuality, and all this second-guessing and Monday-Morning quarterbacking, and gloom and doom prophecy is just not a good thing. It's not the united front we should be offering the rest of the world and it's not reassuring to our own citizens.

***** happens. Sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you're prepared. We are America and we have been both lucky and prepared in the past (for the most part) and hopefully we'll continue to be both in the future. It might be time for us to find that old confidence we used to have and start showing some of it to those countries which hate us as well as to those countries which look to us for guidance.

Meanwhile, all this "heightend awareness" is simply killing me.

John Smolens, of Lewiston, Maine, was charged with resisting arrest for refusing to follow orders after getting off the Maine-to-New York bus, police said Friday. Calvin Segar, of New York City, was charged with obstructing government administration for allegedly giving police a fake name. Both were due in court Friday afternoon.

And now they've evacuated Times Square once again....although it's looking like nothing so far. An abandoned cooler in front of a hotel that no one wanted to claim.

Deep in your hearts, you know it's coming, just a matter of time, they are patient, remember the Old Blind Muslim who led the first attack on the WTC in 1993, when they caught him he said "we will be back to finish the job" it took years but they came back and they finished the job on the morning of 9/11 3000 innocent people DEAD in two hours.
